Despite being a highly anticipated title, Monster Hunter Wilds currently holds mixed reviews on Steam. At the time of writing, only 62% of the 103,519 user reviews are positive. The rest of the reviews are mostly complaints from players who are not satisfied with the state of the game. It’s an interesting scenario considering the game has a massive player base with over 1.3 million all-time peaks.

In this article, we’ll talk about why Monster Hunter Wilds has a mixed review rating despite being a successful title.

Why Monster Hunter Wilds Has a Mixed Steam Rating Tag?

The release of Monster Hunter Wilds back on February 28, 2025, was met with massive fanfare. Despite players encountering performance issues during the beta test, everyone was hoping it would get fixed on release day. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

Performance Issues

The main concern of players is the game’s performance on PC. Some reports claim issues such as crashes, poor optimization, stuttering, and significant frame rate drops. Some players even reported that the game ran worse than the open beta version. This led to the community expressing their frustration through Steam’s review section.

One user by the name of WaterBottle jokingly expressed how “My air fryer is more optimized than this.”

On a serious note, some users admit that the game is fun to play. This might be the reason why Monster Hunter Wilds still has a massive active player base despite community outcry. However, the performance issues just made the game unplayable for some players with mid-range or older hardware. This forced them to either endure severe frame drops or upgrade their systems.

Needless to say, some players are stuck trying to fix issues instead of playing the game. And for many, that frustration isn’t just about poor optimization. It’s also about waiting years for a game they were excited about, only to be locked out of the experience on day one.

Monster Hunter Wilds Has Denuvo DRM

Digital Rights Management, also known as DRM, is a feature that prevents unauthorized copying and distribution of games. While this might be good for game companies, the gaming community is not a big fan of it. The explanation for this is that players claim DRMs like Denuvo can affect the performance of a game. This means it might require more resources to run and can cause problems for lower-spec systems.

However, there is hope that Denuvo will not be staying forever. Monster Hunter Worlds had Denuvo on for three years before it was removed completely. We can hope that the same thing will happen to MH Wilds after three years.

Capcom Responds to Fans With Frequent Hotfixes

Fortunately, Capcom faced the backlash instead of going radio silent. Multiple patch updates are being released in hopes of resolving all issues and improving performance. The patch updates are quite frequent, with a hotfix being released once every few days. Players remain hopeful that these updates will enhance the overall experience and shift the community’s perception positively.
