While slaying the small hostile creatures can be a cakewalk in Monster Hunter Wilds, large monsters are quite difficult to take on. Battles become more challenging, especially for newcomers to the franchise. As a result, fainting is a common gameplay mechanic in Moster Hunter games.

Fainting, often referred to as ‘Carting’ by the community, occurs when your health bar is completely depleted. While in other games, this might result in an instant failure, it doesn’t necessarily mean the end of your quest in Monster Hunter Wilds. Instead, you will be brought back to the nearest camp by Palicos with full HP restoration, and the quest will keep running. However, fainting comes with several negative effects. Let’s explore what happens when you faint in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Fainting is one of the failure conditions for quests in Monster Hunter Wilds, but you won’t immediately lose the quest if you faint once. Most quests have a faint limit of three, i.e. you will fail if you faint three times during the specific quest. However, certain quests have higher faint limits, like 5 times. We recommend to check the failure conditions before heading out on a hunting quest.

Each time you faint, the reward you receive is significantly reduced. For example, if you faint once in a quest with three faint limitations, you will lose one-third of your reward. In quests with five faint limits, one-fifth of the reward will be reduced for a single faint. This means the more you faint, the less reward you earn, and ultimately, you fail the quest if you exceed the fainting limits.

Unlike previous installments, your food effects remain active even after you faint. Buffs will persist until their timer duration expires. Additionally, fainting in Monster Hunter Wilds activates certain skills, such as Fortify—which increases your attack and defense after fainting.

Since fainting returns you to a camp, you must travel back to the target monster to resume the quest. If the target monster is far from the camp, you will need to cover a significant distance to reach it. While mounting on Seikrat allows you to track the monster effectively, the traveling time can be a huge drawback in quests with a low time limit.
