Climbing is, of course, the core mechanic in PEAK. Everything in the game revolves around this one aspect, and despite looking quite simple on paper, it has many intricacies and nuances, mixed with various controls and tools for different things. Thus, for someone who’s never played a title like this before, even the simplest things might seem a little confusing. However, to help you out, we have discussed the fundamentals of climbing in PEAK in this article.

To learn anything new, we must start with the absolute basics. The core climbing controls in PEAK aren’t too complicated, and on paper, they are quite easy. Every single mechanic serves you in your quest to beat the terrain and reach the peak of the mountain. So, to understand the basic movements in the game, here is a short list:

  • Left Click: Hold to grip any wall or surface while you choose the direction with your mouse. It is the primary mechanic that you will use the most.
  • Shift: Hold while climbing to lunge upward. It’s a good way to climb faster; however, remember that it drains stamina.
  • Spacebar: Simply tap it to do a normal jump. It is essential for reaching ledges above you. Furthermore, you can also use a jump after a lunge to go a bit higher.

Tips To Help You During a Climb in PEAK

PEAK is a co-op game as well as a survival one. So, helping your teammates to benefit the overall party, including yourself, is a crucial aspect. At the basic level, you can go near a teammate and hold the Right Click to lend them a helping hand and lift them up. This is quite an important thing to do to make sure that no one is struggling against the terrain. However, to do this, one player must reach a secure place above first.

Share Items With Teammates

Other than that, sharing is another basic pillar of a healthy and moving party. As we mentioned, PEAK has survival elements, which means you will have to gather resources and important items to make sure that you don’t go hungry or die from low health. Naturally, you or your teammates might not have the necessary items or even food at all times. In those times of need, sharing resources is the ideal solution. Also, dividing heavy tools among the team evenly is a good idea for lighter backpacks and less stamina drain overall.

Lastly, if you are having trouble reaching an area and it is a bit too high for you, you can stand on your teammate’s head and use them to get some extra reach.

Use Climbing Tools

You don’t have to climb the hard way. To aid your expeditions, the developers have added various climbing tools in the game. For example, gear like the Rope Canon can make your climbing a lot easier and faster, while the Chain Launcher brings much-needed convenience to the table. The former shoots a short rope upward, which you can climb to reach ledges, while the latter creates a chain bridge you can use to cross big gaps between platforms.

Effective Climbing Strategies in PEAK

In a game like PEAK, strategy and tactics are always important to create the safest and quickest route to success. Of course, strategy is a broad term, so we will break down some important tricks that you can utilize to make your life easier. Make sure to follow them during each of your playthroughs, with or without friends.

Upward Is Not the Only Way Forward

The terrains and mountains in the various biomes in PEAK aren’t formulaic. They are asymmetrical, uneven, and chaotic, as they should be. So, blindly climbing upward is not the solution, and sometimes it can even lead you to cul-de-sacs or your death. Thus, sometimes take a breath and plot your route carefully. Going sideways or even downward can also give you better paths.

Resting Is As Important as Climbing

The main objective in PEAK is climbing, yes, but you and your party members cannot do it efficiently if you don’t take a breather and recharge. Flat surfaces in the biomes are not scarce, so whenever you find one, it is a good place and time to rest. While doing that, you can do other important work, such as cooking food, eating, or simply sharing some stories with your buddies. If you try to do this in a sloped area, then your gear might roll down a cliff.

Best Difficulty To Master Climbing in PEAK

PEAK has many different difficulty modes, just like most other games. Among them, the Tenderfoot difficulty is ideal for learning the core climbing mechanics, especially for newcomers. You can switch to this setting from the airport kiosk. If you want to simply explore the game and try new things while getting a handle on the gameplay loop, then the Tenderfoot difficulty will let you do all that without additional distractions or complications.

However, if your teammates or you somehow die during your run with Tenderfoot or some other difficulty setting, then you can simply revive the fallen players by interacting with Altars, Effigies, or Temples.
