Matador is encountered at level 36. However, for a smoother fight, you should be at least level 40 or above when fighting this boss. He is only weak to electric-type attacks. Additionally, he nulls wind attacks. Apart from these, he has no special affinity against any other type of attack.
His electric weakness is quite easy to exploit. But thanks to his unique mechanics, fighting Matador becomes quite difficult, as you will soon find out.

Recommended Team Members for Fighting Matador

As Matador has an electric weakness, it is good to bring along some electric damage dealers. Closer/Motoha is an excellent option for this purpose. However, thanks to Matador’s unique mechanics, bringing only electric attacks won’t cut it. Physical attacks are also necessary for this fight.
Hence, Skull/Ryuji is one of the best options for this fight thanks to his having both physical and electric attacks. If you do not have Skull, then Soy/Shun is a good alternative. As for the Navigator, Puppet is the best option for this fight, as her shields will help the team last much longer. This is essential against Matador who sticks around for a long time thanks to his mechanics.
Finally, Wonder’s two personas can make a big difference. Ame-no-Uzume is a stellar option due to both its electric attacks and its passive which boosts the critical rate of the party. A healing persona is a good option for your second persona, in case your team gets low on health.

Best Tips To Beat Matador in Persona 5 The Phantom X
- Matador’s unique mechanic is his evasion step. He has three unique steps that each make him immune to certain types of attacks. These stances are:
- Reverse-Cape Sweep Step: Evades all skill and gun attacks.
- Mirage-Reverse Step: Evades all normal and gun attacks.
- Cape Sweep-Mirage Step: Evades all skill and normal attacks.
- Each time Matador is hit, he changes his step. As a result, you will need attacks of all types to hit him. Note that you can bypass his evasion step with Highlights. You can also check Matador’s current step by clicking his icon to view his info.
- His second unique mechanic is Capote. Every time Matador’s turn passes, he will gain three stacks of Capote. If his Capote stacks are maxed at the start of his turn, he will use the powerful Estocada attack. However, every time he takes damage, one stack of Capote is removed.
- To effectively manage this fight, often check how many stacks of Capote he has. If he is currently at max stacks, attack him to remove one stack. Otherwise, feel free to set up your DPS for powerful attacks.
- Keep track of his evasion step and prevent Matador from using Estocada, and you will surely achieve victory eventually.
