Back in March 2019, Pokimane faced a major hurdle in her career. She made headlines when a previous video from her live stream — that transpired near the beginning of Poki’s career in 2013 — continuously using the N-word went viral.

Pokimane was heavily misunderstood when she was allegedly believed by many to be using the N-word. However, it was later clarified that she was actually talking about a League of Legends character. The video first reappeared in 2019 when YouTuber Kavos shared it on X. Moreover, the video circulated on social media and was re-shared by Keemstar who pointed out the same.

However, what she really said was:

“This Anivia’s getting cracked.”

In the same thread where Keemstar pointed out his doubt, Pokimane ensured to clarify the misunderstanding. She said:

“I said “this anivia” (shounded like “this nivia”), aka a champion in league of legends.”

Throwback to Pokimane’s Response to Another Controversy

The video clarifies that she was referring to Anivia rather than the racial slur. Although the issue surrounding the video was a misunderstanding, an earlier clip, later discovered to be dated 2013, stirred trouble.

Back in 2013, the streamer became irritated when a male chat participant made disparaging comments about female streamers and “gamer girls.” Clearly annoyed by the remarks, the streamer burst out, saying:

“Ni**a you ain’t funny. That’s not true, maybe you’re just boring as f**k and lame as hell, because only lame N***a’s say that shit.”

Despite the range of opinions fans have on the topic, in 2019, Pokimane explained that the word was not used in a racist or disparaging manner. She took to X and wrote:

“hard for me to speak on this clip’s context because it’s so old (i’m almost 23 and was underage in that clip), but it was definitely not said in a racist or derogatory manner. It was a time period/environment where saying it was more common and used as a replacement for “dude”.”

It’s important to note that Pokimane herself stated that she finds the use of the word repulsive, even though many followers asked the streamer not to apologize. She added:

“it’s been many years and I don’t ever say it now because I realize it’s distasteful and looks bad, and I’ve never said it in a racist way/hard r either (just in a cringey way unfortunately).”
