The open-world game genre is by far the most popular genre out there. Almost every developer has taken their shot at it, but not all of them come out with flying colors. There are more misses than there are hits, and with the genre clogged with so many games, it can get a little difficult to differentiate the two.

If you’re a fan of open-world games and play on PlayStation, the PS library has a healthy collection of open-world games to pick from. To help you select the best of the best heading into 2025, we have compiled this list. In this list, we shall go over the 5 PS games you, as an open-world game fan, need to try out in 2025.

1) Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Starting off the list is PlayStation’s poster boy himself with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. While opinions on the game’s story and narrative are divisive, everyone unanimously agrees that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 offers a definitive next-gen open-world experience. With cutting-edge graphics, non-existent loading times, flashy traversal, and exhilarating combat, Spider-Man 2 faithfully recreates the roller coaster experience of being your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

2) Ghost of Tsushima

For years fans had been craving and praying for an Assassin’s Creed game in Japan, a prayer that was seemingly neglected until Ghost of Tsushima came along. Ghost of Tsushima takes on the Assassin’s Creed formula and puts it against a gorgeous Japanese backdrop. In Tsushima, every view is a painting, crafted with love and beautiful color. While the game’s formula may feel familiar, its stellar combat, paired with gorgeous visuals and art direction, push it to the upper echelons of open-world gaming.

3) Horizon Forbidden West

Horizon Forbidden West builds upon everything you loved about the original Horizon Zero Dawn. Forbidden West picks up after the events of the first game, and immediately throws you into a massive open world, filled with lush green jungles and heavy machinery. This combination of technology-meets-nature is one of a kind, and makes for a gorgeous backdrop. The game’s combat, too, emphasizes a strategic approach and rewards patience. The slow approach gives you a greater sense of scale and allows each piece of the environment to breathe and register.

4) Cyberpunk 2077

Following the release of The Witcher 3, CD Projekt RED was a hot commodity in gaming, and fans were bubbling in excitement over their next project, Cyberpunk 2077. Then the game was released, botched its launch, and the whole controversy lasted a while. However, the devs took the criticism to heart and have completely overhauled Cyberpunk 2077 to be a stellar experience.

The game takes inspiration from several immersive sims, offering you unprecedented freedom in how you approach any scenario. The world itself, Night City, is the star of the show, filled with gorgeous locations with capitalistic terrors lurking within. There are almost no bugs now, too, making 2025 the best time to experience Night City and all its wonders.

With a personal hook to kick off the story, the world is for you to explore and conquer. The map is filled with bandits and zombies for you to maim, keeping you engaged for hours. On a technical level, the game boasts large hordes of zombies, offering you tons of opportunities to wipe them out with smart planning. With elements of stealth and solid shooting mechanics, Days Gone is a fun game worth experiencing.
