Ratios and Their Uses in Factorio

Ratios in Factorio are used to determine the most optimal route of producing goods to maintain a steady flow of production.

Factorio is all about building and managing huge factories and optimizing their production. The layout of your factory, the machine crafting speeds, the modules, the power supplies, and so much more go into determining the output and efficiency of your factories. However, one of the most important factors that often gets overlooked is the Ratio, which determines whether you are in a deficiency. In this guide, we go over Ratios in Factorio and explain them in detail.

What Is a Ratio?

A ratio in Factorio is how much of one item is needed to produce another i.e. one acts as an input for the production of another item. For example, if you need 1 glass of milk to make 1 glass of a milkshake, that makes the ratio 1:1. The ratio shows that consumption of 1 input would produce 1 output.

Presenting another example: 1 Electronic Circuit assembling machine makes 1 Electronic Circuit per cycle. 1 Electronic Circuit requires you to use 3 copper cables. 1 Copper Cable assembling machine makes 2 Copper Cables per cycle, meaning 1 Copper Cable would require 0.5 Copper Cable assembling machines. This means that 3 Copper Cables would require 1.5 Copper Cable assembling machines.

Therefore, 1 Electronic Circuit assembling machine would require 1.5 Copper Cable assembling machines. Putting this into whole numbers would mean 2 Electronic Circuits would require 3 Copper Cable assembling machines. This means the ratio is 2:3.

To simplify, 1 Electronic Circuit assembly machine needs 3 Copper Cables and 1 Copper Cable assembly machine puts out 2 Copper cables.

Therefore, for every 2 Electronic Circuit assembly machines, you would require 3 Copper Cable assembling machines for the optimal output (3 Copper cable assembling machines → 2 Electronic circuit assembling machines). If you run a smaller number, you will risk being at a deficit of copper.

Uses of Ratios

You can use Ratios in Factorio to optimize the setup and production of your factory. This ensuresyou have a constant supply of raw materials to build your desired product without any delay.
