Surviving in a vacuum in Rimworld Odyssey can be tricky if you don’t know how. In this guide, we’ll explore some ways you can survive.
Rimworld’s Odyssey expansion makes space exploration a reality in the game. However, with the nothingness of space comes the inevitable realization that the lack of an atmosphere poses real problems. While you do get access to a basic Gravship at first, you’ll have to prepare it before you can take off with colonists on board.
Without proper protection, your colonists will perish within seconds in the vacuum of outer space. In the following guide, we’ll explore how vacuum in Rimworld Odyssey works and what you can do to protect your colonists against it.
How Does Vacuum in Rimworld Odyssey Work?
Vacuum becomes a real threat when you’re trying to explore asteroids or derelict stations in outer space. No amount of armor, whether standard or power armor, will help your colonists survive in these types of situations. Without proper protection, they’ll run out of oxygen in seconds and die. The game offers two reliable options when it comes to protecting your crew against the effects of vacuum. You can equip them with Vacsuit Helmets and Vacsuits to allow them to survive when they’re exploring outer space. These are essential for mobile crews.
Inside your Gravship, you can also craft Gravship Walls, Vacuum Barriers, and Oxygen Pumps to seal off certain areas. Any of your colonists that stay within such areas will remain protected against vacuum. So, these measures are perfect to protect your stationary crew members.

How Do Vacuum Barriers and Vacsuits Work?
Vacuum Barriers are great when you’re trying to seal off a small space against the vacuum of outer space. However, you’ll need a Construction Skill of 6 and Orbital Tech research to craft these. The material requirements for a vacuum barrier are as follows:
- 2x Components
- 2x Gravlite Panels
- 40x Steel
Tip: You’ll need a source of oxygen within a vacuum-sealed room. Vacuum Barriers won’t produce oxygen but simply protect against vacuum in Rimworld Odyssey.
Vacsuits are great when your colonists need to move around and be mobile. However, you’ll need Orbital Tech research and Machining Table to craft these. Apart from these, you’ll need the following resources to craft a Vacsuit:
- 90x Steel
- 3x Components
- 30x Plasteel
Make sure you wear the Vacsuits with Vacsuit Helmets for complete protection.
