Explore this article to choose whether to use Sea Dog or Mad Dog fighting style in Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.

In Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, the Mad Dog of Shimano, the protagonist of the game, has access to two distinct fighting styles. When you start the game, Majima has his iconic Mad Dog style available to him. In this fighting mode, he utilizes fast movement along with proficient use of knives and handcuffs. This is the assassin-like form of the true Mad Dog of Shimano.
However, Yakuza games are known to give their protagonists multiple fighting stances. Moreover, this game is no different. You unlock the second and final stance, the Sea Dog style, once you gain access to the pirate ship. In this mode, Majima embraces his chaotic nature and wields a pair of cutlasses and pistols like a true pirate. So, which combat stance should you choose between these two?
We have explained each of these two fighting styles and what makes you strong against enemies. Read this article to find out.
Mad Dog Fighting Style

The Mad Dog fighting style utilizes Majima’s proficiency as an assassin wielding daggers. This stance focuses on fast movement and dealing major single-target damage. You gain access to multiple attacks with this fighting style, such as:
- Mad Dog Trick: Chomp
- Mad Dog Trick: Frenzy
- Mad Dog Trick: Serpent
You also gain access to a ranged attack named Demonfire Rain. Upon use, Majima throws out several daggers that inflict damage and return like boomerangs. You can even add elemental damage to these attacks using rings, which are accessories for Majima.
Majima’s Mad Dog Style: Madness summons shadow copies of himself that mirror every move you make. This gives him much-needed defense and crowd control due to his mostly single-target attacks. This style also increases his evading speed significantly, which is helpful for getting away from enemies.
Sea Dog Fighting Style

The Sea Dog style is unlocked after Majima becomes the captain of Goromaru. Being a pirate captain comes with many advantages, one of which is having access to various pirate weapons, such as cutlasses, pistols, and even hooks.
This fighting style heavily focuses on brawling with multiple enemies at once, using raw power. With access to a pistol and grappling hook, you also have excellent ranged damage available in your arsenal. In other words, the Sea Dog style is a versatile fighting stance covering most of your bases in fights.
With the Sea Dog fighting style, you also gain access to Dark Instruments. You unlock them as you progress through the main campaign in Chapter 2 of Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. The Sea Dog: Madness attack changes depending on which Dark Instrument you have equipped:
- Dark God’s Violin: You summon several spectral sharks to attack your enemies.
- Dark God’s Ocarina: You summon a school of Jellyfish to shock your enemies and damage them in the process.
- Dark God’s Guitar: You summon a large ape to rampage around and attack your enemies.
- Dark God’s Saxophone: You summon a large parrot to sweep your enemies away with a gust of wind.

Which Fighting Style Should You Choose?
Both styles are arguably good when it comes to combat. Each has its pros and cons, making fights highly dependent on which stance you can utilize best. Many seasoned Yakuza players might prefer Majima’s old fighting style in the Mad Dog stance, whereas newer players might like the Sea Dog stance due to this being a pirate-themed game.
When it comes to combat efficiency, the Mad Dog style still seems to perform better due to its pure damage output. The Mad Dog style can defeat enemies with ease, having high single-target attacks. Crowd control is also not a problem with the doppelgangers being present on the field. However, the Sea Dog style is fun to use, as it allows you to grapple hook enemies and wield cutlasses like a true pirate.
