Everything about Gourds in Black Myth: Wukong

Gourds are the primary means of healing Black Myth: Wukong. The Destined One can also heal using Spells like Ring of Fire and by performing see-through combos. However, Gourds offer the most efficient and consistent way of healing. Furthermore, each Gourd in Black Myth: Wukong comes with its own set of unique perks offering passive bonuses. Gourds also have two internal parts that offer their own perks – Drinks and Soaks. Drinks regulate the amount of heal a single sip of the Gourd will offer, and also passive healing effects. Whereas the Soaks offer passive bonuses that either buff the healing capabilities of the Soak or offer stat bonuses for the Destined One.

There are also certain elemental Gourds that offer temporary immunity against the Four Banes effects – Burn, Frost, Shock, and Poison. Furthermore, certain Gourds that you collect as you progress through Black Myth: Wukong’s main story offer upgrade tiers. The very first default Gourd you acquire in the game can be upgraded to not only increase its effectiveness but also the amount of heals it offers. Although every single Gourd type has its specific use during the moment-to-moment gameplay, some of them are admittedly better than others. Certain Gourds offer perks that are incredibly overpowered and offer a much better way to ensure survivability.

Here are the 5 best Gourds in Black Myth: Wukong that you should not miss out on.

Best Gourds in Black Myth: Wukong

The best Gourds in Black Myth: Wukong are Supreme Gourd, Jade Guanyin Gourd, Stained Jade Gourd, Trailblazer’s Scarlet Gourd, and Qing-Tian Gourd. These Gourds offer superior perks compared to other Gourds in Black Myth: Wukong, be it for healing or as passive buffs. Furthermore, these Gourds also come with much higher healing charges (apart from Trailblazer Gourd) making them ideal for end-game and New Game+. For instance, the Supreme Gourd is the only Gourd type in the game that offers 10 healing charges. You can further enhance the healing effects of the Gourd with the Jade Dew, which heals up to 55% of the total HP in a single sip. That is more than enough to get through the end-game encounters in Black Myth: Wukong.

Similarly, the Jade Guanyin Gourd offers 8 healing charges, while also extending the healing effect to the summoned clones (A Pluck of Many). The Qing-Tian Gourd is an outlier here, as it only offers a single healing charge by default. Likewise, the Trailblazer’s Scarlet Gourd offers 5 healing charges, but it has the unique perk of healing up to maximum HP with the first sip. However, the Qing-Tian Gourd comes with a unique perk of regenerating Gourd uses after a short duration. That makes the Qing-Tian Gourd one of the most powerful Gourds in the game, especially in New Game+ cycles.

That said, here are the 5 best Gourds in Black Myth: Wukong:

  1. Supreme Gourd
  2. Jade Guanyin Gourd
  3. Stained Jade Gourd
  4. Trailblazer’s Scarlet Gourd
  5. Qing-Tian Gourd

5) Qing-Tian Gourd

The Qing-Tian Gourd (Image via GameScience)
  • Gourd: Qing-Tian Gourd
  • Healing charges: 1
  • Primary perk: Slowly recovers healing charge
  • Rarity: Legendary
  • Best use case(s): Best used for New Game+
  • How to obtain: Obtained from the Shen Monkey in New Game+

The Qing-Tian Gourd is best for New Game+ which isn’t surprising considering it exclusively unlocks in the first NG+ cycle. The primary perk that sets the Qing-Tian Gourd apart from the rest is its ability to restore healing charge(s) over time. However, the downside of using this Gourd is that the Destined One only gets a single healing charge to use at any given time. After using the single healing charge, you have to wait until it refills automatically over time, akin to Might. The reason it’s one of the best choices in NG+ despite its glaring limitation is that healing isn’t limited to Gourds, especially in the end-game. You can also heal via see-throughs and charged-heavy attacks.

As such, when you’re in New Game+, you’re relying way less on the Gourd to heal you and mostly are dependent on passive healing via other means. The Gourd only serves as the emergency healing option. That said, not every player might find having a single healing charge useful, hence the Qing-Tian Gourd is placed at the bottom of this list. You obtain the Qing-Tian Gourd from the Shen Monkey in Chapter 1 (Black Wind Mountain) in New Game+.

4) Trailblazer’s Scarlet Gourd

  • Gourd: Trailblazer’s Scarlet Gourd
  • Healing charges: 5
  • Primary perk: When Gourd is full, the first sip replenishes the maximum HP
  • Rarity: Rare
  • Best use case(s): Best used for early to mid-game chapters
  • How to obtain: Obtained by purchasing at the Shen Monkey in Chapter 1 (The Black Wind Mountain)

The Trailblazer’s Scarlet Gourd is one of the very first healing Gourds you will get access to in Black Myth: Wukong. This is especially true if you pre-ordered the game on PS5 or PC since it’s part of the pre-order bonus. And despite it being one of the earliest Gourd unlocks, the Trailblazer’s Scarlet Gourd is one of the best when it comes to active healing. The primary perk of the Trailblazer’s Scarlet Gourd is to heal up to maximum HP on the first sip. This forces a very specific playstyle, where instead of healing the instant you take damage, you’re incentivized to endure and only heal when your HP reaches critical. The only limitation of this Gourd is its limited healing charges.

If you pre-ordered Black Myth: Wukong, the Trailblazer’s Scarlet Gourd will be available to use after interacting with the first Keeper’s Shrine. Otherwise, you can buy it from the Shen Monkey.

3) Stained Jade Gourd

  • Gourd: Stained Jade Gourd
  • Healing charges: 7
  • Primary perk: Significantly increases healing speed
  • Rarity: Epic
  • Best use case(s): Best used in end-game chapters and New Game+
  • How to obtain: Obtained from a treasure chest after defeating the Scropionlord in Chapter 4 (The Webbed Hollow)

The Stained Jade Gourd is arguably the best choice for a mid-game Gourd, that you can use for some of the end-game sections as well. The primary perk of the Stained Jade Gourd is its significantly increased healing speed, which makes it the ideal choice for boss fights, especially the end-game ones. As you approach the final of Black Myth: Wukong, you’ll face off against enemies and bosses that are incredibly agile and give very little downtime to buff or heal the Destined One. This is where the Stained Jade Gourd comes into play. Using the Stained Jade Gourd is pretty much as fast as using the Healing Gourd in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

It cuts back the healing animation in half, making it suitable for bosses like the Scorpionlord, Duskveil, Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master, Yellow Loong, and Erlang, the Sacred Divinity. The Stained Jade Gourd can be obtained from a treasure chest in teh Scorpionlord boss arena in Chapter 4’s Secret area – Purple Cloud Mountain.

2) Jade Guanyin Gourd

  • Gourd: Jade Guanyin Gourd
  • Healing charges: 8
  • Primary perk: Using the Gourd recovers the HP of the clones (A Pluck of Many) nearby
  • Rarity: Legendary
  • Best use case(s): Best used for end-game and New Game+
  • How to obtain: Upgraded from the Jade Lotus Gourd in exchange for 3 Louija Fragments

The Jade Guanyin Gourd, much like the Qing-Tian Gourd is best used in New Game+. The primary perk of the Jade Guanyin Gourd allows it to heal not only the Destined One but also the duplicates summoned via the A Pluck of Many Spell. Given the duplicates get a massive buff thanks to the Freed Mind Relic in New Game+, the Jade Guanyin Gourd is best used there. However, it should be noted that the Gourd only replenishes the health of the duplicates, but does not extend the time they can stay on the battlefield. Furthermore, the Gourd cannot resurrect the clones that have already perished but only heal those that have taken damage.

The Jade Guanyin Gourd is obtained by upgrading the Jade Lotus Gourd with 3 Louija Fragments. The Jade Lotus Gourd can be bought from the Shen Monkey after defeating Yellow Wind Sage and completing Chapter 2 – Yellow Wind Ridge.

1) Supreme Gourd

The Supreme Gourd (Image via GameScience)
  • Gourd: Supreme Gourd
  • Healing charges: 10
  • Primary perk: None
  • Rarity: Mythical
  • Best use case(s): best used for end-game and New Game+
  • How to obtain: Upgraded from the regular Healing Gourd

The Supreme Gourd is the best in Black Myth: Wukong simply due to the amount of healing charges it offers. Once fully upgraded, the Supreme Gourd offers 10 healing charges, which makes it the best choice for both, base New Game as well as New Game+. However, there’s a catch. the Supreme Gourd doesn’t have any primary perk. Equipping the Supreme Gourd relegates you to just the Soak and Drink perks. Furthermore, unlocking the Supreme Gourd takes quite a bit of time and effort. You first need to upgrade the Standard Healing Gourd to its maximum tier (9 charges). And then complete the Old Man NPC’s questline to get the final upgrade for the Gourd.

While it doesn’t offer any primary perk, the Supreme Gourds is still the best option simply due to the fact that it lets you heal 10 times. 10 healing charges are more than enough to get you through some of the toughest end-game bosses in Black Myth: Wukong, even in New Game+ cycles.
