In The First Descendant, characters are your classes, and each possesses unique skills, passives, and ultimate abilities. Moreover, the First Descendant class system resembles games like Destiny 2 and Warframe. First, you will have three standard abilities with cooldowns based on their power. Additionally, you can also use multiple guns and accessories to develop your build. Finally, each class has its pros and cons and optimal usage. In this First Descendant guide, we will describe how to play the Freyna character, how to unlock her, and who would enjoy this class playstyle.
Should you play Freyna in The First Descendant?
Although Freyna is not one of the available starter characters, she would still be a solid choice for beginners willing to unlock her character. Her damage ceiling won’t be as high as Gley’s, but her rotation is much less complex and not as risk-based. Players of all skill levels should be able to pick this character up and start dealing decent damage after some practice.
Who is Freyna? – Story
After graduating from the military academy, Freyna joined an elite special force unit called Colon. The movements and missions of this unit are kept strictly confidential. Furthermore, the identity of individual members is a closely guarded secret, even from each other. Freyna was an accomplished member of this force, killing her targets with ruthless efficiency.
Freyna was assigned a mission to attack a Priest of the Order of Truth along with three other Colon members. They appeared to be completely successful, but upon return to Room 0 for debriefing, the other three members suddenly collapsed and transformed into Vulgus. Without a choice, Freyna shot and killed them all, including one that had been her lover. The corpses began to release venous spores, which triggered Freyna’s own poisonous Arche to erupt. Although she survived, Freyna now struggles with the death of her lover and a lot of guilt.
How to Play Freyna – Character Gameplay
Freyna uses her Arche abilities to apply damage to and inflict poison on as many enemies as possible, with the result that she can then deal greater damage with her firearm. Additionally, she has defensive skills that will grant her additional protection for a limited period of time. Her damage is more consistent than other Descendant characters, and she has the potential to do well in various content modes.
Area Damage Damage: your main goal is to poison as many enemies as possible due to your passive, which increases skill power. You want to rotate between your two skills that throw toxin on the ground, and try to maintain high uptime on the debuffs to as many enemies as possible. Then, hit Venomous Baptism and blast enemies one by one while they tick with DOT damage.
Single-Target Damage: Freyn’s damage is high on a single target if you rotate poison DOT skills. Always try to keep the DOT ticking, cycle between skills, and do not spam them. This will reward you with sustained damage.
Movement and Speed: Freyna’s mobility is about average for the game in The First Descendant compared to the other characters. She’s not a slow-moving character, but she also has no abilities that boost her speed. However, you can activate the Defense Mechanism to increase defense stat.
Bosses and Ultimates: Use the single target strategy by maintaining DOT for consistent damage, but don’t expect a lot of bursts.
Defenses and Survival Tips: If you’re looking to get out of a tight spot with Freyna, you’ll rely on her Defense Mechanism ability. This will grant you a temporary Bodyarmor, which raises your DEF and can also passively inflict poison on attackers.

Freyna Passive and Active Skills
All characters in The First Descendant have one passive skill, three standard skills and one ultimate skill to choose from. When you play as the Freyna character in the First Descendant, you will need to understand the basics of her class and available skills.
- Passive skills: Passive buffs and bonuses are automatically applied or under certain conditions.
- Active and Ultimate skills: These are activated by a player (effects on demand) and vary by character. Each character has unique skills to match their role and playstyle.
Passive Skill
Contagion Links – Increases Freyna’s Toxic Skill Power by the number of nearby enemies inflicted with Poison.
- Usage – this skill rewards AOE and is especially helpful in clearing mobs. Just be aware that your overall damage will increase by poisoning enemies, so always try to maintain some poison and not rely just on gunfire.
Active Skills
Toxic Trauma – Fires a Toxic Bullet. Enemies hit by the Toxic Bullet receive damage. A Toxic Puddle is created where the Toxic Bullet explodes. Enemies that touch the Toxic Puddle are inflicted with Room 0 Trauma. Room 0 Trauma deals continuous damage and inflicts poison on nearby enemies at fixed intervals.
- Usage – this is your single target poison damage ability, which also leaves a puddle on the ground. Therefore, enemies can move through and get rebuffed, taking damage. Use this consistently because the cooldown is low and comes back quickly.
Defense Mechanism – Gains Plague Bodyarmor for a certain period of time. Plague Bodyarmor increases DEF and has a chance to inflict Room 0 Trauma on the attacking enemy. Room 0 Trauma deals continuous damage and inflicts poison on nearby enemies at fixed intervals.
- Usage – In the First Descendant, it is a multiple-purpose defensive buff that can inflict poison on nearby enemies, pop this offensively when charging in or when you play defensively with Freyna and need to get cover and avoid damage.
Decomposed Poison – Throws toxins to create a Toxic Swamp. Enemies entering the Toxic Swamp receive continuous damage, and become inflicted with Poison and Venom-Soaked. Enemies inflicted with Venom-Soaked leave Toxic Footprints as they move, and enemies that touch Toxic Footprints also become inflicted with Poison.
- Usage – this sill is your main AOE debuff with a wider radius and longer cooldown. To maintain pressure on targets, rotate between Toxic Trauma and Decomposed Posion to keep DOT pressure high.
Ultimate Skill
Venomous Baptism – Switches the equipped weapon to Venom Baptism. The original weapon returns when all bullets have been used or a certain period of time has passed. Enemies hit by Venom Baptism bullets receive damage and become inflicted with Room 0 Trauma. Room 0 Trauma deals continuous damage and inflicts poison on nearby enemies at fixed intervals.
Usage – use this to go on a rampage after all your enemies are debuffed with toxins.
