The races in Umamusume: Pretty Derby have two distinct surface types: Turf and Dirt. Turf tracks are covered in short grass and are the most common, with nearly all umas having an aptitude for it. Dirt races have a few key differences from their Turf counterparts that require a varied approach to training for them. Additionally, the game does not feature many umas with an aptitude for Dirt racing, causing confusion regarding how to train them.

In Team Trials, Dirt races always feature Mile distances, and the trainee has to be built accordingly.

Running Styles

Front Runners and Pace Chasers are best suited to dominate Dirt races. The shorter distances don’t afford Late Surgers and End Closers an advantage for their superior stamina conservation. They are also more likely to get blocked and boxed in around the final corner.

Legacies

For all characters besides Haru Urara, you will have to create or borrow a Legacy uma with a Dirt Spark to raise Dirt aptitude to “A” rank. Besides that, try to find as many stat Sparks and a suitable unique skill Spark.

Skills

Besides Front Runners, the only speed skills trainees should learn are the ones that activate on the final corner or beyond, with easy-to-meet conditions. It is also important to have at least one rare or two normal stamina-recovery skills. Unless your Stamina stat is at 600 or more, your uma will not reach top speed in the final leg without stamina-recovery.

Unlike Turf tracks, dirt surfaces are better for racing under wet conditions. There are also a greater number of uphill and downhill portions in the Dirt tracks, making skills like ‘1,500,000 CC’ and ‘Moxie’ relevant. Invest in passive (green) skills with limited conditions if there are no other options. Good examples include ‘Firm Conditions,’ ‘Wet Conditions,’ and ‘Standard Distance.’
