The Guts stat in Umamusume Pretty Derby is one of the few things that confound new players and veterans alike. It is bashed in the community as the least important part of a build—unnecessary and completely useless. All of that is true.

However, the mechanics of Guts training, combined with a few bonuses the stat provides, create an unconventional and experimental build. Attempting this build is recommended for experienced players who have completed the Career Mode a few times at least.

Training Guts increases Speed and Power by roughly half the value of Guts gained. The build seeks to maximize the training yield of all three with Support Cards and training bonuses. Although not fully understood, Guts is known to:

  • Determines who wins a spot struggle among front runners.
  • Provide bonus speed while duelling with another runner during the final spurt.
  • Improve performance on corners.
  • Function as a secondary Stamina reserve.
  • Reduce stamina loss while maintaining pace.

With these benefits, the build can work with low Stamina on Sprint and Mile distances, as Guts will cover for its deficiency.

Characters

Effective candidates for the build need to have a 10% or 20% Guts bonus along with aptitudes for Sprint and Mile distances. These parameters narrow down our potential Guts trainees to:

  • Daiwa Scarlet (20% Guts)
  • Haru Urara (20% Guts)
  • King Halo (10% Guts)
  • Biwa Hayahide (10% Guts)
    • Improve Mile aptitude via Sparks.
  • Rice Shower (20% Guts)
    • Improve Mile aptitude via Sparks.

Front Runner and Pace Chaser strategies work best with this build, as it will have a relatively low Power stat. With a 20% bonus to Guts and an “A” rank aptitude for Mile tracks, Daiwa Scarlet is the best trainee for the Guts build, as her front running style has the most to gain from a high Guts stat.

Support Cards

The most important part of a Guts build is the Support Cards you choose. Here are the Support Card distributions for a Guts build and the minimum stats to achieve with them:

  • 3 Speed
  • 3 Guts

Training Speed also improves Power, while Guts adds to both, creating the ideal stat distribution for a short-distance Front Runner.

SpeedStamina Power Guts Wit
900+300+600+800+400+
  • 3 Guts
  • 3 Wisdom

Both Guts and Wit training improve Speed to a lesser degree. When combined with bonuses to Guts training, Speed can increase considerably alongside Guts and Wit. Your Wit cards must have good energy recovery to train for additional turns before rest.

SpeedStamina Power Guts Wit
700+300+600+800+600+

A 6 Guts Support Card build was apparently a part of the meta in the Japanese server at one point, but that seems too unbalanced to recommend.

Skills

  • At least one stamina-recovery skill.
  • Early race skills for Front Runners to maintain their lead.
  • Any good passive (green) skills that your support cards happen to have? Suitable examples include ‘Lone Wolf,’ ‘Standard Distance,’ and ‘Firm Conditions.’
  • Acceleration and velocity-increasing (yellow) skills, especially ones that activate in the final leg. These will need to make up for the low Power stat.
