Developed by Nexon, Vindictus Defying Fate uses the setting and story of its predecessor in an action RPG format with smooth combat and varied character customization. While the game’s combat mechanics may have a Souls-like feel to them, its leveling and character progression system takes a very different route.

All four playable characters have their own unique weapons, skills, and ability trees to unlock. With the game allowing you to assign one of the characters as a follower, your combat effectiveness can increase substantially by understanding how the game’s progression system works.

The three main ways of progressing and strengthening your characters are leveling up, unlocking abilities, and weapon improvement.

1) Leveling Up

Leveling up provides a flat increase to your basic stats like health, attack, and defense. You gain levels by completing missions and defeating enemies. Your character level corresponds to your account level, meaning that if your account reaches level 4, all characters will be at level 4 with the appropriate stat increase.

2) Abilities

There are two ability trees to access in Defying Fate: Exclusive Abilities and Shared Abilities. Exclusive Abilities unlock and improve character-specific skills and attack combos. All characters have their own Exclusive Abilities tree to progress. Shared Abilities are applied account-wide to all characters. These are general improvements, such as increased Flovian Flask capacity and stat boosts.

Both Exclusive Abilities and Shared Abilities require ability points to unlock them. You gain ability points by finding them in hidden areas and chests, or by earning them through boss fights. Ability points gained by one character can be used on another, as the points are stored in your account rather than being tied to individual characters.

Besides ability points, you will require rare materials to unlock powerful abilities. The Still Crystal of Eternity and Frozen Orb of Origins unlock key and ultimate Shared Abilities, respectively. The Burning Crystal of Eternity and Tempestuous Orb of Origins unlock key and ultimate Exclusive Abilities. Find these materials by defeating bosses, completing Kalbram Supplies missions, and finishing Special Missions.

3) Weapon Crafting and Enhancement

Every weapon is character-specific, meaning Delia cannot use Fiona’s longsword and shield. You can craft weapons via the village’s blacksmith if you have found any weapon blueprint designs while adventuring. Weapon blueprint designs are most commonly found by defeating bosses and completing Special Missions.

The blacksmith can enhance any weapon in your inventory using materials and Hanner. Enhancing a weapon increases its level, boosting stats like Critical Chance, Attack, and Precision. Each weapon has a set enhancement limit and cannot be leveled beyond it. You can view and change crafted weapons through the Fitting Room’s Appearance tab in the village.
