Find out the truth about Marvel Rivals devs and other team members getting laid off. Are the reports true?

The news of Marvel Rivals devs getting laid off reached every corner within the online community of the game. Fans have since been worried about the game’s future, and also about the devs affected by the layoff. Why did it happen? What are the laid-off devs doing now? What does Marvel Rivals’ future look like now? We will answer all these questions for you one by one.
NetEase Games’ new 6v6 hero shooter had been in development for quite some time before finally releasing on December 6, 2024. There was also a closed testing period prior to its full release that not everybody had access to. Fortunately, the game was a hit at launch. It did exceptionally well compared to other competitors.
Marvel Rivals’ Season 0 lasted slightly more than a month and has now entered Season 1. The developers have been delivering their promises well until now. In fact, there were many major changes mid-season during S1: Eternal Night Falls that show their dedication towards their production.
If the team is so devoted to bring such an impactful hero shooter, how come people were fired from their jobs? NetEase Games has already made it pretty clear.
Marvel Rivals Devs Were Unfortunately Laid Off
Where Did It Start?
Thaddeus Sasser worked as the Game Director for Marvel Rivals. Both he and his team worked on the game’s overall development and level design. They offered guidance on various topics to the primary development team. However, in a recent LinkedIn post that Sasser uploaded, he talked about what went down between his team and NetEase Games.
He called the industry “weird” because he couldn’t comprehend why his team was laid off despite delivering a stellar performance with the game. His words suggest that it was as much of a surprise to him as it was to us. Sasser doesn’t claim to have seen it coming and was clearly disappointed in what happened.

Why Were the Devs Fired?
The Game Director wasn’t the only person who was laid off from the project. His entire Seattle-based design team suffered the consequence. NetEase Games issued a brief statement to IGN, confirming the layoffs and the reason behind them.
The development studio claimed that they had to “adjust Marvel Rivals’ development team structure”. Why? They said that the reason was purely “organizational” and that they wanted to optimize development efficiency for the game.
They did not elaborate on the reasons any further. Moreover, the company also maintains the confidentiality of the laid-off clients and refuses to name them. We also don’t have any information on the number of devs that were laid off. On a side note, the company revealed that the Seattle team was a part of a larger global design team that supported the game.
The Future of Marvel Rivals
Even though an entire team is no longer part of the project, NetEase Games tried calming down the regular Marvel Rivals players regarding the laid-off devs by revealing that there are many employees still at work. They claim that this project remains their priority and will continue evolving.
Recently, we saw many major changes as part of Season 1.5 (or Season 1 phase two) that show the team behind the game is adamant about maintaining the quality of the game in the future as well. Regardless of their promises, though, the community has mixed reactions. Could this affect the player base? Only time will tell.
