YouTube star, online personality, and philanthropist MrBeast (aka Jimmy) is among the most popular figures in the content creation scene. Almost all of his videos garner more than 100 million views. In March 2024, he uploaded a video titled I Survived 7 Days In An Abandoned City, which received over 222 million views. In the video, Jimmy visited a seemingly abandoned property in Croatia. The YouTuber was also accompanied by his crew members and fellow YouTuber Mark Rober.

Despite the overall success of the video, this project received some flak. A few X users did their research and found out that the place was actually in Kupari, a village in Croatia. A verified user (@pitdesi) called out Jimmy for inaccurately labeling it as “abandoned.” He wrote the following:

“I recognized the “abandoned city” as Kupari Croatia, which is neither abandoned nor a city, it’s just a few abandoned buildings in Dubrovnik.”

He stated that the place is quite close to public spots such as hotels and resorts:

“There is a popular bar a 3 min walk away and a Sheraton 12 mins walk away from where they claim they were running out of food & had to send up a flare to get the helicopter to get them. I googled and it turns out he paid a bunch of money to keep the regular tourists and locals out of it while he was filming.”

What Did MrBeast Say About the Controversy?

Despite being extremely popular and generally regarded for his positive impact on the online community, MrBeast has recently encountered numerous controversies.

After the “abandoned city” video was uploaded to X in April 2024, many fans gathered to add context in the Community Notes section of the post, asserting that the location is not actually abandoned. Some others alleged that Jimmy’s claim of spending seven consecutive days in the place wasn’t accurate either, as a couple of crew members were sick and missed days.

Jimmy has since addressed this particular controversy by sharing a description of the location. He suggested that while it may have hotels now, it was severely abandoned at one point due to being bombed during the Croatian War of Independence (1991 to 1995). He wrote the following:

“Seems the note was removed but for clarity it was abandoned decades ago. Also I never said you can’t drive to it I just thought it would be cooler to fly a helicopter lol.”

Jimmy has also faced accusations of faking his videos using CGI. These allegations arose after DogPack404, a YouTuber and former crew member of MrBeast, released a video series claiming this. Additionally, he made serious allegations, including claims that Jimmy hired a known sex offender and fostered a toxic work environment.
