Desmond was the protagonist since the first Assassin’s Creed game. He was the one inside the Animus at Abstergo, where Doctor Warren Vidic was performing experiments on him. Using the Animus, Vidic tried to unlock and search the memory of Desmond’s ancestors and reveal the whereabouts of Isu artifacts, known as the Pieces of Eden.

However, Desmond managed to escape the facility with the help of Vidic’s assistant, Lucy, who was an undercover member of the Assassin Order. This is when Desmond officially joins the Assassins with help from two other Assassins, Rebecca and Shawn. Since he shares an ancestry with several of the most popular assassins throughout history, he dives back into an Animus, but this time for the Assassin Order. He is determined to locate the missing Pieces of Eden before Abstergo can get their hands on them.

These powerful artifacts are revealed to be the key to save the planet from a devastating solar flare expected to hit in 2012. After much searching throughout the first few games, the group finally learns of an ancient Isu temple, where they need to go to stop the apocalyptic event.

In the deepest reaches of this temple, Desmond meets Juno and Minerva, both of whom were members of the Isu civilization. Eventually, they inform Desmond that the only way to save the planet is for Desmond to sacrifice his life. So, at the end of Assassin’s Creed 3, Desmond dies.

Although the Assassin’s Creed series decided to kill off Desmond in Assassin’s Creed 3, the former assassin wasn’t completely written off. Abstergo recovered Desmond’s body after his death, and they uploaded his mind into the Animus cloud. Through this transfer, Desmond’s mind (or soul) escapes to a place known as The Grey.

In this place, Desmond eventually becomes The Reader. This entity sifts through all possible futures to find a way to prevent apocalyptic events that could wipe off all life on Earth. In Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the current protagonist of the modern day, Layla Hassan, enters The Grey. She comes face to face with The Reader and decides to help The Reader, even at the cost of her own life.
