A few days ago, a new game was released on the Steam platform called PirateFi. This game started off as a mystery back then and still remains one. Players who were impressed by the game’s pirate setting desperately wanted to try out this Sea of Thieves knock-off title. Unfortunately, nobody knew what they were signing up for when they downloaded this game.

The game officially came out in February 2025. A player later reported that their antivirus software prevented them from running the game due to the presence of malware. The antivirus program also flagged PirateFi for containing a Trojan.Win32.Lazzzy.gen. If you are new to the world of malware, this was a Trojan Horse virus, which is no joke when released in your system.

While a Trojan Horse virus may not do much harm to your software or user experience, it poses a severe threat to your privacy. When released in the system freely, this virus could steal sensitive information like login credentials, card numbers, and other confidential information. In fact, it could also be used to monitor the user’s daily activity, like tracking browsing history and more.

Valve acted fast and didn’t take a lot of time to remove PirateFi from Steam for a safer environment for its users. The exact number of affected people is still unknown. Fortunately for Steam players, this game wasn’t a big enough hit to scam the masses, but it was still bad enough that this incident occurred. Steam has now removed PirateFi, and the game is now nowhere to be found online.

How To Prevent Cases Like the Steam-PirateFi Controversy?

Those who downloaded and played PirateFi received a notification from Steam after they took down the game. The platform didn’t reveal a whole lot about the situation, but they did their due diligence of informing the users, which the latter appreciate. Steam suggested the users run a full-system scan using the antivirus program that they trust and/or use regularly. But what can you do to prevent such incidents from happening?

The first step that any PC user usually takes is avoiding pirated/untrustworthy sites. These can contain malware that you may not be prepared for. Stick to this drill to avoid downloading any unsuspecting or unwanted software along with the desired content. However, if you have already done so, be careful at every step while installing to ensure that you don’t install the additional software that comes along with it. If, in case, you find something on your system that doesn’t serve a purpose there or you don’t remember downloading, check and uninstall it right away.

However, since an incident like PirateFi happened on a reputable platform like Steam, it seems like you can never be too careful. There is one lesson to learn here, though. Try waiting for a week or two if you don’t know much about a game, its developer, or its publisher. This will allow you to test the waters before jumping into uncharted territories.
