The Necromancy of Thay book, or the book of the dead, is an item in Baldur’s Gate 3 in Act 1 that’s shrouded in mystery. Players are given very little information on how to proceed. The quest related to this book spans all the way from Act 1 to Act 3. So, you needn’t pay much attention to it if you still haven’t made your way to the latter.

Where to Find the Necromancy of Thay Book?

The Necromancy of Thay book is found in the Blighted Village in Act 1. To find this book, follow the steps below:

  • Make your way to the Blighted Village.
  • Goblins roam the village. You can either fight or talk your way out of conflict.
  • Once the coast is clear, head to the building close to the entrance of the village. This structure can be identified by its big double-door gate.
  • Go to the cellar in the building and make your way down. In the cellar, pull the lever near the bookshelf to unveil a secret entrance.
  • Work your way to the Ornate Mirror. You can interact with the mirror to intimidate or persuade it into letting you in.
  • Past the mirror, enter a room to find a rusted key that can be used to open a rusted door. The door is guarded by traps so be careful!
  • Behind the door, you will find the Necromancy of Thay book.

What to do with The Necromancy of Thay Book?

Once you have the book, follow the steps below in the areas mentioned:

In the Blighted Village/Whispering Depths

  • Head up the cellar and out of the building.
  • As you head out of the building into the Blighted Village, you will notice a well next to the teleporter. Go down the well to discover the Whispering Depths.
  • Beware of spiders as you make your way across the Depths. At the end of the lair awaits the Phase Spider Matriarch boss.
  • Below the boss arena is a pit where you will find the Dark Amethyst gem.
  • Combine the gem with the book to open it. The character reading the book will reap the benefits: hence, pick the reader wisely.
  • The skill check requirements for three pages of the book are 10, 15 and 20. Complete these to attain the Forbidden Knowledge which grants +1 to Wisdom skill checks.
  • Failing the skill checks curses you and inflicts debuffs. The first debuff will last 50 turns, and the next will be permanent so be careful.
  • The quest will proceed next in Baldur’s Gate so you can give it a rest.

  • Head to Philgrave’s Mansion near the docks in Baldur’s Gate. You can enter the mansion by breaking in the door, by lockpicking it, climbing up the balcony, or through the vents at the back.
  • Sneak around the mansion using the invisibility potion, and work your way to Mystic Carrion. Interact with Carrion and pay him 1500 Gold to get information on the Codex in Sorcerous Sundries. Head to this location.

Sorcerous Sundries

  • Head to Sorcerous Sundries and talk to Tolna Tome-Monger. Talk to her about rare books and pass the skill check to convince her to let you in on some information on Tomes.
  • The tome is in her office upstairs. Head to the office and interact with the book on her shelf to open a portal. The portal leads you to the Sorcerous Vault.
  • Work your way through the booby-trapped vault till you head to a room with multiple doors. Go through the doors in the following order: Silverhand, Evocation, Wish.
  • Enter the room and pull the lever. Head back out through any of the doors to get to the staring area.
  • Now go through the doors in the following order: Gate, Illusion, Elminister and enter the vault.
  • Head to the case in the room and unlock it to retrieve the Codex.
  • Read the Codex. This will curse you but can be remedied by casting a Remove Curse spell. This ends the quest.

Once completed, you will gain the Dans Macabre spell, allowing you to summon up to 5 ghouls without needing to select a corpse.
