This guide provides an overview of the gears in Path of Exile 2 (PoE2) and details about when and how to modify them.
In Path of Exile 2, modifying your gear is a key part of your progression. It allows you to keep up with the difficulty level and increases your survival chances over time. Upgrading gear also contributes to accessing powerful builds, offering flexibility in taking out your enemies.
Understanding the gear system and mechanics in PoE2 is a little challenging for beginners and even for some veterans of the franchise. Let’s have a quick overview of the gears in Path of Exile 2 and details on when and how to modify them.

When Is the Right Time to Modify Gear in Path of Exile 2
The gears in Path of Exile 2 are of four types: Normal, Magic, Rare, and Unique. Each can be distinguished by their modifier mechanics.
- Normal (White) – No mod can be attached.
- Magic (Blue) – Can add up to 2 modifiers.
- Rare (Yellow) – Can add up to 6 modifiers.
- Unique (Orange) – Have exclusive mods that can only be added to the specific gears.
Upgrading and modifying gears is an essential part of your journey. Although there is not exactly a right or wrong time for modifying gear, you can ideally start modifying gears once you progress a little further into the campaign and acquire Magic and Rare-type gears.
Start by focusing on equipping Magic items in all gear slots during the early game. As modifying gear is not a high-priority task during this stage, concentrate on leveling and increasing damage output through skill gems. Over time, you will eventually get Rare items as drops from enemies. This is the ideal time to start modifying your gears. Add mods such as increased damage, resistances, or health boosts, and make sure they align with your build.
How To Modify Your Gear in Path of Exile 2
You need several crafting items to modify your gear. The following are some key crafting materials that allow you to upgrade your gear or add modifiers:
- Orb of Transmutation – Upgrades a Normal item to a Magic item with 1 modifier
- Orb of Augmentation – Augments a Magic item with a new random modifier
- Regal Orb – Upgrades a Magic item to a Rare item
- Exalted Orb – Augments a Rare item with a new random modifier
Runes and Essence are some other useful crafting materials. The former allows you to mitigate the affix pressure when slotted in gear pieces, and the latter can guarantee one or two mods on Normal and Magic items, based on the tier. Distilled Emotions, Catalysts, and Breach Rings are some precious endgame items that can be used to modify and enhance your gear further and prepare your build for the endgame.
Ways To Get Crafting Materials in Path of Exile 2
- Some of these crafting materials can be obtained commonly by defeating enemies or purchasing them through vendors with gold.
- You can also get higher-tier crafting items via trading.
- Additionally, the Disenchant option allows you to turn in your existing items to get back the crafting materials. You can salvage unused or unwanted Magic and Rare items to get some Orb of Transmutation, Orb of Augmentation, Regal Orb, and Exalted Orb.
- Use the Expedition vendor Rog to reroll affixes and create high-value gear. This process is referred to as “Rogcrafting” in the community.
