With the Hunter X Hunter manga having returned to Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump, many of you may want to pick up the series again. However, given that it’s been a long time since the anime ended, many of you must be left wondering where to pick up the Hunter X Hunter manga after the anime ended.

You can pick up the Hunter X Hunter manga from chapter 339 after watching the 2011 anime. This is because the animation studio Madhouse only adapts the anime up until the events in chapter 339. However, one may need to revisit parts of it to get the full gist of the plot.

Where to Start Reading the Hunter X Hunter Manga After the Anime?

You can start reading the Hunter x Hunter manga from chapter 339 after the anime ends. While animation studio Madhouse does adapt the manga up until chapter 339, some panels weren’t adapted in the anime. Hence, you could go through the chapter to get the full gist of what is to come next. You should also note that the majority of the chapter is just filled with manga panels with no dialogue; hence, it should be a swift read.

As for chapter 339, it acts as the final chapter in the manga’s 13th Hunter Chairman Election arc. From the very next chapter, i.e., chapter 340, the manga begins the next story arc, the Succession Contest arc.

Up until now, there have been two anime adaptations of the Hunter X Hunter manga. The first anime was adapted by Nippon Animation in 1999, while the second anime was adapted by Madhouse in 2011. The Nippon Animation version has a total of 62 anime episodes covering 184 chapters from the manga. As for the Madhouse version, the anime has a total of 148 episodes after adapting 339 chapters from the manga.

As far as the story arcs are concerned, Madhouse Studio effectively animated all the story arcs from the manga as part of the anime, except for the ongoing story arc. The anime includes six story arcs, namely the Hunter Exam arc, Heavens Arena arc, Yorknew City arc, Greed Island arc, Chimera Ant arc, and 13th Hunter Chairman Election arc.

What Is the Current Hunter X Hunter Arc?

The current story arc in Hunter X Hunter manga is the Succession Contest arc. While many fans have labeled the story arc “Dark Continent Expedition arc,” that is just a fan-given name. As far as the real name for the story arc is concerned, it is called the Succession Contest arc.

The reason the story arc is named as such is because it majorly focuses on the contest between the Kakin Princes to see which one of them will survive till the end and win the right to succeed the Kakin King. Surprisingly, despite the manga having released over 60 chapters after the anime ended, the story arc is still ongoing.

On top of that, manga creator Yoshihiro Togashi has also revealed his intention to finish up the drafts for the manga until chapter 430 by the end of the year. This suggests that the story arc will at least extend to that chapter.

On a surprising note, the entire story arc takes place within the Dark Continent Expedition vessel called the Black Whale 1, which is also the reason why fans have dubbed it the “Dark Continent Expedition arc.”

Do Gon and Killua Come Back in the Hunter X Hunter Manga?

Unfortunately, Gon and Killua do not appear in the Hunter X Hunter manga after chapter 339. While they will possibly return in the future, neither of them has made their return till now. This is an odd development as they are the protagonist and deuteragonist of the series, respectively, but neither of them has made an appearance in the series for over 60 manga chapters.

Fortunately, there are several other fan-favorite characters from the series who appear in the manga from time to time. Some of them include Kurapika, Melody, Hisoka, and members of the Phantom Troupe.

So, you can pick up the Hunter X Hunter manga from chapter 339 if you wish to learn what happens after the anime ends. It has been over 10 years since the anime ended, however, the manga creator Yoshihiro Togashi has only been able to publish just over 60 manga chapters. This is due to his poor health, which has forced him to take multiple long hiatuses.

The good thing is that the manga creator has finally picked up some pace and is aiming to finish the drafts of the manga up until chapter 430 by the end of the year. This means that fans are certain to get at least those many chapters soon. Hopefully, the manga creator’s health improves, allowing him to finish the series in the near future.
