Sir Crocodile is a former Warlord of the Sea who also ran a crime syndicate known as Baroque Works as their leader. He was one of the most feared figures in the Grand Line. From the moment he was introduced in the series, he was shown to enjoy toying with people who were weaker than him. Initially he was intimidating and was a master strategist who always planned several steps ahead of his enemies.

As a warlord, he was supposed to take care of the people in Alabasta, but Crocodile ignored them as he planned to take over the kingdom. Observers also note that he is prideful and does not tolerate any insults directed at him. Also, if he feels like punishing someone, his pitiless nature shows up as Crocodile does not think twice before killing anyone.

As Crocodile’s past remains a mystery, we do not know why he left a carefree, romanticized life of a pirate and became obsessed with military and power. He strongly believed that only fools would go on declaring their dreams and not focus on being powerful.

As the leader of Baroque Works, a hidden criminal syndicate, Crocodile operated under an alias and called himself Mr. 0. He had designed the organization with a hierarchical system where every agent was given codenames. No one working for the organization had any idea as to who their leader truly was.

The organization’s main goal was to overthrow the Alabasta Kingdom and give the authority of the kingdom to Crocodile to rule over it. They went ahead and spread misinformation that caused civil unrest while secretly manipulating events. Crocodile has planned that he would take over the kingdom and rule once it was at its weakest.

His plans success revolved around him getting his hands on an ancient weapon, Pluton, which he believed was hidden within Alabasta. Baroque Works consisted of several powerful members, including Mr. 1 (Daz Bones), Miss All Sunday (Nico Robin), and Mr. 2 (Bon Clay). Each of these members played an important role in Crocodile’s schemes. Although none of them were aware of his full ambitions.

Powers and Abilities

Crocodile had eaten the devil fruit called the Suna Suna no Mi (Sand Sand Fruit); it is a Logia-type. It allows the user to control and transform into sand. This ability further grants him both offensive and defensive capabilities. He can create sandstorms, manipulate sand to drain moisture from his opponents, and transform into sand to avoid attacks.

He has mastered the powers he acquired, and combined with his strategic mind, he becomes a formidable opponent. Additionally, he also carries a golden hook, which is laced with poison, adding another layer to his attacks. Also, his strength is not just physical; he is also very intellectual. Sir Crocodile can analyze any situation on hand and devise plans efficiently for counterattacks.

He only has one weakness, and that is water. His sand abilities become ineffective when exposed to moisture, which Luffy exploited during their battle in Alabasta. Additionally, his overconfidence often blinds him to the possibility of failure, leading him to underestimate his opponents.

Crocodile was the main antagonist of the Alabasta Arc. His plan to take over the kingdom was almost flawless, and for the first time in the series, our protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, found himself completely outmatched. Throughout this arc, Luffy was defeated by Crocodile twice; this was something no other villain had done till that point.

During the first battle, Crocodile completely overwhelms Luffy with his abilities and leaves him to die in the desert. However, Luffy managed to survive and faced Crocodile in a second encounter, which was equally brutal. Crocodile impaled Luffy with his golden hook laced with deadly poison and left him to die again. However, Luffy managed to survive both encounters and also found a way to counter him by using water.

Their final battle took place in the capital of Alabasta and was one of the most intense fights. Luffy is determined to save Vivi and her kingdom. With a devastating final punch, he was able to send Crocodile crashing through the underground chamber. This effectively ended his reign over Alabasta.

His Fate After the Alabasta Arc

After Luffy defeated him in the Alabasta incident, the authorities imprisoned Crocodile in Impel Down. They placed him in level 6, which they reserve for the most dangerous criminals. However, during the Impel Down Arc, he was freed by Luffy and Emporio Ivankov, forming an alliance with them.

Also, during the Marineford War, he fought against pirates and marines alike, as his new objective was to cause chaos and disrupt the war rather than side with anyone. He ultimately shifted his focus to ensuring that Luffy survives the battle. Following the events of the war, he seems to disappear. He last formed an alliance with Daz Bones as he set out to rebuild his influence in the New World.

Conclusion

Crocodile in One Piece is one of the most iconic villains, leaving a lasting impact on the series despite being defeated early on. His intelligence, combat prowess, and ambition make him a difficult opponent, and his role in the Alabasta Arc remains one of the most important moments in Luffy’s journey.
