Everything you need to know about the returning monster, Gravios, in Monster Hunter Wilds, including its origin, abilities, and more.
Capcom recently confirmed that Gravios, the Flying Wyvern that was last seen in Monster Hunter Generations, will return to the series’ latest mainline entry—Monster Hunter Wilds. After Monster Hunter World’s release back in 2018, fans have been waiting for Capcom to revitalize the MH4U roster of monsters. The studio did bring back fan favorites like Gore Magala, Shagaru Magala, and even Seregios, with MH Rise.
However, a majority of the MH4U roster was left behind. Thankfully, it seems Capcom is finally listening to old-school Monster Hunter fans and revitalizing the MH4U roster, starting with the likes of Gypceros, and now—Gravios.
To begin, Gravios is essentially the evolved form of another Flying Wyvern, Basarios. And if you’re aware of the kind of rapport Basarios has with MH Rise fans, you’re in for a treat with Gravios. Here’s everything you need to know about the newly revealed Flying Wyvern in Monster Hunter Wilds, Gravios.
Gravios’ Origin in Monster Hunter Wilds
Gravios, much like Gypceros, is a monster that debuted in the series with the very first Monster Hunter game (2004). It was essentially among the very few Wyverns that were given an evolution tree. It’s basically quite similar to how Gore Magala evolves into Shagaru Magala or Xeno’jiiva evolves into Safi’jiiva. Gravios evolves from another Flying Wyvern, Basarios. As such, both Basarios and Gravios share a ton of similarities.
However, unlike Basarios, Gravios is a much more aggressive Wyvern, known for its brute strength and elemental abilities. Furthermore, unlike Basarios, Gravios is capable of flight, which makes it much more intimidating.
Since its appearance in Monster Hunter (2004), Gravios (and Basarios) have been a staple of the series until Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. When Capcom finally revealed Basarios for MH Rise, fans were speculating Gravios would also make a return. However, that didn’t happen until Monster Hunter Wilds. So far, from what we know, only Gravios has been confirmed for MH Wilds.
There’s no official information on Basarios’ presence in the upcoming title. However, given how closely tied both monsters are, it’s quite likely that Basarios will be making a return in the upcoming Monster Hunter.
Gravios’ Abilities in Monster Hunter Wilds
Gravios shares a ton of similarities with its juvenile form, Basarios, when it comes to its abilities. The monster is found mostly in deserted areas or regions with sparse vegetation. Furthermore, Gravios is found near swamps or volcanos, which also serve as a pretty potent source of nutrition for the creature. Much like Basarios, Gravios is covered in a thick stone-like hide, which isn’t easily penetrable.
Although Gravios’ hide isn’t nearly as tough as something like Espinas’, it certainly can withstand a lot of damage. Furthermore, much like its juvenile form, Gravios uses its thick hide as both defensive and offensive tools, which is precisely what makes it quite challenging.
Similarly to Basarios, Gravios also has the ability to burrow deep into the ground and emerge from it, while also charging at the hunter. Furthermore, it also uses its body to attack hunters by rolling toward them. In addition to that, Gravios can also dispel a potent knockout gas that puts nearby hunters and small monsters to sleep. On top of that, the monster can also expel a flammable gas from its underbelly, which ignites immediately upon coming into contact with another monster or hunter.
Lastly, in MH Wilds, Gravios can dispel its flammable gas in the form of a laser. The monster fires the laser towards the ground, which then results in igniting a vast area near it. This new attack also deals a significant amount of fire damage and knockback. Suffice it to say, Gravios won’t be an easy encounter. Much like Basarios in MH Wilds, Gravios is going to be one of the toughest challenges in Low and High Rank quests. As such, you’d want to come prepared with plenty of Steadfast, Earplug, and Defense Jewels.
