The Ant King was the hidden boss of the Jeju Island S-Rank Gate. The series described him as one of the most powerful monsters. He came into existence as a result of the Queen of the Ant Colony giving birth to him. The Queen had a unique power— as the number of ants in her colony grew, she was able to produce stronger offspring. She had reached a point where her ability to create formidable warriors was fully developed. People say that the Dungeon manifested the Ant King to protect itself.

People officially recognized the Ant King as the Queen Ant’s Commander. He was classified as a huge threat to Hunters, as he showed signs of intelligence and could strategize while fighting. The Ant King was not just a strong, mindless beast—this even shocked Jin-Woo. He possessed a calculated and ruthless approach to combat, making him a truly terrifying opponent. Therefore, he earned his name as the true boss of the Dungeon.

When Hunters confirmed his appearance, it shook the Hunter’s Association. When the gate of the Ant Colony spawned, it was difficult for the Korean Hunters to close it. Even without the Ant King’s presence, humans had failed to close it. After losing hundreds of people in an attempt to win, closing the gate seemed like a distant dream.

They decided to leave these ants alone on the island, hoping they would die of starvation. To their shock, the ants evolved to have wings, solving the problem of hunger and enabling them to hunt at farther distances.

That is when the Hunter Association sent their best S-Rank Hunters, as they could not sit quietly and watch humanity go to waste. This raid was a success to an extent, as they were able to kill the Queen and her guards with minimal trouble. That is when the Ant King made his appearance, and the whole situation took a horrifying turn. The Ant King symbolized the escalating threat level within the dungeons, a sign that the system was constantly getting more difficult.

Moreover, his existence foreshadowed the arrival of even more powerful beings and the impending clash between humanity and the forces beyond their comprehension.

The Ant King was the strongest child of the Queen and the hidden boss of an S-Rank Gate. People described him as the biggest threat to humanity, calling him an all-powerful individual magical beast. The Ant King was different from his kind, as he had human-like intelligence. His bloodthirst and desire to fight strong opponents often led him to indulge in fights that caused human casualties. Jin-Woo compared him to Baran in terms of strength.

His abilities, including superhuman strength and speed, adaptability, regeneration, and strategic thinking, made him an exceptionally dangerous foe. All these abilities combined created a monster that was not only physically powerful but also clever. These factors made the Ant King a truly dangerous and formidable opponent.

The Ant King heard the cries of his Queen as she was dying and rushed toward her. Seeing her dead made him go on a massacre spree. When he sensed someone powerful, he came back to fight him. The Ant King did not hesitate or waste any time and went straight to punch Jin-Woo with all his might. Unfortunately, it had no effect on Jin-Woo, leaving only a small cut on his lips.

Finally, having found an opponent of his level, he went all out to fight Jin-Woo. Slowly, as their battle continued, what felt like an easy win for the Ant King suddenly turned into a losing battle. Jin-Woo was powering up at a great speed and utilized his Shadow Soldiers to corner the enemy.

When the tables turned in Jin-Woo’s favor, the Ant King decided to flee as it was clear that he could not win against the protagonist and his Shadow Soldiers. While running away, Jin-Woo used his telekinetic powers and smashed him down. All of a sudden, the once proud and powerful Ant King begged for his life and tried to crawl away. Eventually, he met his death as Jin-Woo used his Mutilation skill to inflict critical damage, ensuring that the Ant King was no more.

Why the Ant King Was a Crucial Character in Solo Leveling’s Story

There was more to the Ant King than his overwhelming power. He played a key role in introducing the audience to the kind of threats they should expect from the series. Also, his role as an antagonist gave our protagonist, Jin-Woo, a platform to level up. It pushed Jin-Woo to confront his abilities and overcome his weaknesses. He was finally able to use his army efficiently.

The battle between the Ant King and Jin-Woo was also considered to be the start of a new era.

In simple terms, the existence of a creature like the Ant King was escalated to make sure he was perceived as a huge threat that lay within the dungeons in the eyes of the Hunter Association. We are not given much backstory on him, which adds to the idea that his introduction was just to help the plot progress faster.

As we know, his abilities were exponentially higher than any creature introduced before. He served as a jumpstart for the protagonist to evolve faster and become comfortable with his new abilities, allowing for the seamless introduction of stronger characters.

Conclusion

Even if the Ant King’s contribution as an antagonist was not very significant in the eyes of Jin-Woo, it is important to give him credit. Knowing the consequences of his death later led to Jin-Woo releasing so much power in battle that he unintentionally left behind traces of Ashborn’s power. This might feel insignificant, but it catalyzed the main story to begin, as Monarchs came down to look for Jin-Woo, and the hunt continued.
