The Guardian, also known as the Dream Guardian or Dream Visitor, is an early-game character in Baldur’s Gate 3. The Guardian is created by the players themselves during the character creation process. They are responsible for assigning attributes like gender to the Guardian.

As the name suggests, the Dream Guardian appears in dream sequences claiming to be on the player’s side. However, the character’s motives remain shrouded in mystery.

Note: Spoilers ahead.

Who is the Guardian?

The Guardian is an NPC who claims to protect the player and gives them valuable information. The Guardian dream sequences are linked to the tadpole in the player character’s brain.

Act 1

Players first encounter the Guardian in Act 1 after a long rest at the camp. The Guardian appears in a dream sequence clad in armor and asks you to tap into your Illithid powers. They ask you to not resist the powers but to nurture them instead, while the Guardian keeps them from consuming you.

The Guardian also tries to bond with you over your shared struggle with the tadpole parasite. The mysterious visitor then claims that they have been protecting you from the influence of the Absolute and will not let you become a mind flayer.

Act 2

The Guardian makes multiple appearances in Act 2 in the Shadow-Cursed Lands. They guide you towards Baldur’s Gate and an inevitable confrontation with the Elder Brain.

Act 3

It is in the final act of the game that the Guardian reveals their true identity. The Guardian turns out to be a mind flayer, the Emperor himself.

The Emperor is Balduran, the founder of Baldur’s Gate, who was infected by the tadpole parasite and reborn as an Illithid. Embracing the newfound powers, the Emperor ruled Baldur’s Gate from the shadows till the events of Baldur’s Gate 3. He uses the disguise of the Guardian to get on your good side before the game’s final act.
