Aka Akasaka’s Oshi no Ko is perhaps one of the most popular and hyped-up animanga series of the past few years. This gripping seinen series delves into the dark underbelly of the idol industry. It portrays a haunting picture of both the upsides and downsides of fame in the showbiz.

The plot kicked off following the tragic murder of Ai Hoshino, a beloved pop idol with a troubled past. At first, it seemed like Ai was the victim of a crazed fan’s obsession, who murdered her due to being unable to cope with the news of her pregnancy. However, as the series went on, it became clear that Ai’s death was not as clear-cut as it seemed, which left a burning question in fans’ minds – Who killed Ai Hoshino in Oshi no Ko?

The answer to this question is as haunting as it is shocking – Hikaru Kamiki, the biological father of Aqua and Ruby Hoshino and Ai Hoshino’s former lover, was directly responsible for Ai’s death.

Hikaru Kamiki, the president of Kamiki Productions, is the biological father of Aquamarine “Aqua” Hoshino and Ruby Hoshino. He fathered them from his past relationship with B-Komachi’s leader, Ai Hoshino. He is also the main antagonist of the Oshi no Ko series, seeing as to how he was directly responsible for Ai’s murder and was also planning to kill Ruby.

As the series went on, Hikaru’s tragic past came to light. At the age of 10, Hikaru joined the Lalalie Theatrical Company in hopes of becoming an actor. However, Airi Himekawa, an actress at the company, began sexually taking advantage of him. At the age of 11, Hikaru fathered Airi’s son, Taiki Himekawa. Because of this, Airi, who was already a married adult at the time, continued to take advantage of Hikaru until he finally broke down and confessed everything to Airi’s husband, who decided to commit murder-suicide upon learning the truth. Thus, the years of abuse that Hikaru suffered at the hands of Airi finally came to an end when she was killed by her husband, who killed himself shortly afterwards.

In Oshi no Ko, Hikaru Kamiki’s story portrayed him as a tragic villain, whose life was marred by years of abuse, neglect, and a desperate need to be loved by someone. His traumatic past left him feeling empty, and he developed a strong need to be genuinely loved by someone. He had been consumed by the darkness of the entertainment industry and was already too far gone. After getting into a relationship with Ai, Hikaru became emotionally dependent on her.

After their breakup, Hikaru further headed down a dark path, as he inadvertently ended up causing Ai’s death. This resulted in him developing a warped mindset, as he eventually became a sadistic and unhinged murderer who used his charisma to befriend and manipulate others to commit murders on his behalf. He believed that every single one of his murders was for the purpose of elevating Ai’s existence in the world. To accomplish this, he was even willing to kill his own daughter, Ruby Hoshino, whom he deemed unworthy of surpassing Ai.

Due to the trauma from years of abuse, Hikaru Kamiki had a desperate need to be loved by someone. He met Ai Hoshino at Lalalie, where the two eventually fell in love and started dating in secret. Since Hikaru was completely emotionally dependent on Ai, he was devastated when she broke off their relationship. He suffered a psychotic breakdown, which led him to reveal Ai’s address and the news of her pregnancy to a disgruntled fan, Ryosuke Sugano.

Ryosuke was a fan who had an unhealthy obsession with Ai and was unable to cope with her pregnancy. This led to him visiting Ai’s home one day and stabbing her with a knife before her performance. Due to the weight of his guilt, Ryosuke ended up taking his own life soon afterwards. However, Ai’s death was not the intended outcome of Hikaru’s actions, who ended up falling into a deeper pit of despair, especially after learning that Ai had truly loved him.

How Did Aqua Find Out the Truth?

After witnessing his mother’s death, Aqua joined the entertainment industry to seek revenge against her killer. Several years passed like this, as both Ruby and Aqua moved further up in the industry, with the latter relentlessly trying to uncover the truth.

However, Aqua wasn’t the one to discover the identity of his father. It was Akane Kurokawa, Aqua’s girlfriend at the time, who discovered Hikaru Kamiki’s true identity. After Hikaru sent her flowers following her win at the Japan Film Awards, Akane dug deeper into his identity and became convinced that he must be Aqua and Ruby’s father. Although she had decided not to tell Aqua about this, the latter eventually found out about the truth.

Apparently, Aqua had been shadowing Akane’s movements for a long time via a tracker he had planted on her. This revelation strained their relationship and led to Aqua breaking up with her to seek revenge against his father. After figuring out his father’s actual identity and his involvement in several heinous crimes, Aqua confronted Hikaru Kamiki in Oshi no Ko chapter 159 with the determination to end his life in order to protect Ruby’s future.

In Oshi no Ko chapter 159, Aqua finally came face-to-face with his father, Hikaru Kamiki. Aqua confronted Hikaru about his role in instigating several murders by preying on innocent people and pushing them over the edge, calling him “more hideous than a murderer.” Aqua knew that Hikaru was also the one who tried to have Ruby killed at the hands of Fuyuko Nino. As such, Aqua decided to end Hikaru’s life once and for all, in order to protect Ruby’s future.

However, even when faced with death, Hikaru tried to smooth talk his way out of this situation. He tried to convince Aqua that killing him would only tarnish Ruby’s reputation as the “sister of a murderer.” Hikaru also told Aqua that he had his whole life ahead and that stabbing him wouldn’t solve anything. That said, Aqua was prepared to throw his entire life away if it meant that he could protect Ruby’s future.

It was at this point that Hikaru began to truly panic. He questioned Aqua’s sanity and even begged him to stop when Aqua stabbed himself with a knife in order to frame Hikaru for his death. Thus, Aqua sacrificed his life by throwing himself off a cliff with Hikaru in order to ensure that Ruby’s reputation wouldn’t be tarnished. This resulted in both father and son drowning in the sea below the cliff, thus concluding Aqua’s quest for revenge.
