Why Are Popular Streamers Getting Demonetized on Twitch? Controversy Explored

Twitch streamer FaZe Kaysan alleges that the platform has demonetized him due to having an “Iran” tag in his streams.

Recently, several streamers alleged that Twitch reduced their ad revenue. The Amazon-owned platform faced criticism for supporting far-right or far-left streamers. However, Twitch has now cut the ad money for some streamers. One affected streamer is FaZe Clan member Kaysan. He claimed that Twitch didn’t pay him any ad revenue for the entire month of November:

“This month, I noticed that I was receiving zero dollars in ad money while running ads.”

He also revealed that he contacted his Twitch representative, who informed him about his demonetization. This surprised Kaysan, as he firmly believes he hasn’t broken any Community Guidelines. He later explained that the issue arose because he used “Iran” as a tag on his stream. The streamer stated:

“I messaged her, I said, ‘Hey, do you mind looking into this for me? This is a little strange.’ She came back and told me that I got demonetized because I had Iran as a tag.”

He added:

“As you guys know, I’m Iranian and I’ve had that same tag for about two years. I don’t speak about politics, I don’t come on here and speak about politics. I’m actually very curious to know if streamers like HasanAbi have been demonetized for talking about politics.”

According to Kaysan’s explanation, it seems Twitch has taken punitive action against streamers who have used flags as tags. The reason behind this decision remains unclear, as Twitch has yet to issue an official response.

What Other Streamers Have Been Demonetized?

Kaysan isn’t the only streamer demonetized for using their country’s flag as a stream tag. Fellow streamer BigEx claims he lost all revenue because he used “Venezuela” as a tag. The streamer wrote:

“I’m about to go live right now, I just found out I was demonetized on twitch for representing my country Venezuela, for the past month I didn’t make a single penny on ads. I have had Venezuela in my tags for the longest. This is absurd I’m missing thousands of dollars.”

FaZe Clan member Nick “Lacy” has also raised a similar concern. He revealed that his daily earnings, which used to be around $10,000, have suddenly dropped to $2,000. He also added that, unlike Kaysan, he didn’t even have any tags. Speaking about the situation, he said:

“I’m not getting ad revenue. I’m not getting the correct ad revenue. I don’t even have tags in my name. I don’t talk about politics. My ad revenue went from $10,000 plus at some points per day is now $2000 a day. So, for someone who was making upwards of five figures a day, now only making $2000 a day of ad revenue. Something is wrong.”
