Here are some reasons why the Kickstarter stealth action game Necrofugitive should be on your Steam playlist.

Necrofugitive is a stealth action game where you play as an escaped cultist prisoner who has the power to assimilate corpses to stay alive or shapeshift. It’s a game with a similar concept to the 2009 cult classic, Prototype, where combat is brutal as you mow down waves of enemies. Of course, it’s also a stealth game, so you can sneak past guards if you prefer that playstyle.
The game is currently on Kickstarter, and a demo is out on Steam for players to check. If you are curious about the game, now’s the best time to do a trial run for free. With that said, here is why Necrofugitive on Steam should be on your playlist next.
Why You Should Add Necrofugitive to Your Steam Playlist

Set in a Gothic Medieval World Setting
The game is set in the war-torn kingdom of Avencia during a time of witch hunts, famine, pestilence, and civil strife. The game takes you through dilapidated dungeons, desolate villages, and dense forests. These locations are all rendered in atmospheric pixel art with dynamic lighting and hand-drawn animations, adding more to their dark and gloomy setting.
The areas in Necrofugitive remind us of the classic Castlevania games. The fact that it’s a 2-D sidescroller adds more to its likeness. The only difference is, you are not the hero in this game. You are actually the threat that threatens to bring the downfall of all men. Whether you are creeping through forest glades or pursuing enemies in plague-town hamlets, Avencia’s medieval world is as much against you as the guardsmen pursuing you.
Its incessant turmoil and superstition define your character not as a hero but as a supernatural oddity, one whose presence affronts a kingdom consumed by fear.
Playing a Villain On a Rampage Is Fun

One of Necrofugitive’s selling points is that you are not the one saving the world. Instead, you play as a shapeshifting cultist of Skoroz. This eldritch entity is known as the god of chaos. With the kingdom going on a witch hunt, you’re the only one left who can save the cult from being extinct for good.
With that said, the god of chaos bestowed upon you the power to assimilate your foes. You can consume their corpses to grow in power and even copy their likeness. The assimilation mechanic reminds us of games like Carrion, except your growth in Necrofugitive is gradual. When push comes to shove, you can transform into a hulking behemoth that wipes out forces or destroys walls in a few swipes of its claws.
The best part of this game is the combat system. There is no limit to how many enemies are chasing after you. Enemies don’t despawn if there are too many of them. Instead, they take advantage of their number. The AI knows when you are a real threat. Some soldiers chasing after you can try and juke your attacks. Some will even run away. These are not just NPCs that will blindly march into their deaths. And that’s only in the demo version. Perhaps the AI gets even better in the full release.
Gameplay

The game does not hold your hand. If you mess up your stealth, NPCs will call reinforcements, and you will have to deal with them before even more enemies arrive. When that happens, it’s you against the world. Fortunately, you don’t have to clear every enemy to complete a stage. All you have to do is pick up a key to escape. Alternatively, you can go ham in monster form and just break the door leading to the exit.
After clearing stages, you can access a skill tree where you unlock more devastating ways to bring carnage to anyone who stands in your way. Both the prisoner and the monster form have their own separate skill trees, allowing for distinct playstyles—stealthy execution and deception as the prisoner or full-blown slaughter and brute force as the beast. Currently, the skill tree is fairly limited in scope, with only a handful of upgrades available in the demo. However, the foundation is clearly in place for a deeper, more strategic system in the full release.
When is Necrofugitive Releasing?
There is no exact release date for Necrofugitive. The game is currently running a Kickstarter campaign where it needs $50,000 to continue development. Keep in mind that this is only for the completion of Act 1 of the game. If the project secures the necessary funds, the developers, Black Garden, state they can deliver by the end of 2025. The rest of the content will depend on the total funds raised and the sales of the game. This means if the game gets enough attention and financial support, we can expect more acts and expanded content to be released in the future. For now, you can try the demo for Necrofugitive on Steam.
