Turf Wars is easily one of the most fascinating new additions in Monster Hunter World. While the previous generation of Monster Hunter games did feature monster vs monster battles, those were either mostly relegated to cutscenes or scripted events with very little player agency. However, in Monster Hunter World, these monster vs monster battles, i.e., Turf Wars, were part of the moment-to-moment gameplay. Although seeing two ferocious titans duke it out against one another is quite spectacular, it also serves a very important gameplay purpose in MH World. Turf Wars, if you can capitalize on it, can often give you an upper hand against some of the toughest monster encounters.

Given the feature’s importance in MH World, fans might be expecting to see Turf Wars return in the upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds. Fortunately, Turf Wars is making a return in Monster Hunter Wilds, albeit with some changes. Here’s everything you need to know about Turf Wars in Monster Hunter Wilds.

What Is Turf Wars in Monster Hunter

Turf Wars is essentially a feature introduced in Monster Hunter World where two different monsters inhabiting the same ecosystem can dynamically start fighting one another during a hunt. These dynamic monster battles aren’t controlled by the player. However, more often than not, these do offer tangible gameplay benefits. The first, and perhaps the most obvious, benefit is that during a Turf War, the monster you’re hunting takes extra damage without you having to do anything. Furthermore, Turf Wars also help divert the aggression of a monster away from the hunter (player). This gives you plenty of time to sharpen your weapon, heal, apply buffs, etc.

And if you’re lucky, Turf Wars will often end up breaking parts of the monster you’re hunting, which significantly reduces the difficulty of the rest of the battle. Although Turf Wars are usually beneficial to the hunter, there are also instances where they might end up becoming a hindrance. In Low-Rank hunts, Turf Wars usually end up helping the hunter get an edge against the monsters. However, in High Rank, the dynamic nature of Turf Wars makes it feel more like a hindrance.

Monsters like Deviljho, Bazelgeuse, and Uragaan are the prime reason why Turf Wars can feel annoying in High and Master Rank. However, if you come prepared with the right tools, you can turn the odds of a Turf War in your favour, pretty easily. It’s a feature that gets plenty of praise from fans of Monster Hunter World. The Turf Wars feature also made a return in Monster Hunter Rise, albeit on a much smaller scale. Furthermore, Capcom expanded the Turf Wars feature in MH Rise with Wyvern Riding.

Is Turf Wars in Monster Hunter Wilds

Turf Wars is returning in Monster Hunter Wilds. Turf Wars is once again fully dynamic in MH Wilds, owing to the game’s open-world structure. Furthermore, the Turf Wars in Monster Hunter Wilds are much more spectacular due to the new “horde” mechanic. While Capcom has not revealed much regarding the feature, we did get a small glimpse at what Turf Wars looks like in MH Wilds. New monsters like the Doshaguma, which roam in packs, can dynamically fight other monsters during a hunt. Furthermore, hunters can also influence these Turf Wars by luring a monster into a different territory. There’s also a hint at a Turf War in MH Wilds’ gameplay trailer.

The game’s release date reveal trailer gives a small glimpse at the battle between Rey Dau and Arkveld. Both Rey Dau and Arkveld are new monsters debuting in the series with Monster Hunter Wilds. While the battle looks somewhat scripted, it can very well end up being a Turf War, perhaps the one that introduces players to Arkveld.
