Marques Brownlee, also known as MKBHD, is a famous tech reviewer with a following of 19.6M subscribers on his YouTube channel.
Popularly known as MKBHD, Marques Brownlee is a New Jersey native well-known for his reviews on all things tech. He has a massive following on YouTube, standing at a staggering 19.6 million subscribers on his channel. He began uploading review videos when he was in school and has seen steady growth ever since.
In 2024, he has been the center of a number of controversies. Here are the biggest controversies of 2024 that Marques was involved in.
1) Marques Brownlee Criticizes Humane AI Pin
On April 15, 2024, Marques shared a review of the Humane AI pin on his YouTube channel. The video, titled “The Worst Product I’ve Ever Reviewed… For Now,” has garnered 8,406,153 views, backed by a lot of criticism for Marques. Eventually, this started a huge discussion on social media, where many people showed disagreement with his comments on the product.
In the video, Marques Brownlee said,
“It’s supposed to just answer questions, right? It can kind of do that sometimes, but one – it’s often slow because most of these requests go to the Cloud and come back, and there’s just a long wait. And two – it’s often wrong because AI can still hallucinate and there are still issues with it, just not understanding correctly or just saying the wrong thing.”
He further added,
“Speaking of battery life… really bad and inconsistent, which is annoying. So, it’s already kind of bad enough that you have another device that you also have to charge every single day. But with this, it’s actually more than that. You have to constantly babysit the battery and swap out boosters, and charge this thing and keep it charged multiple times per day.”
Moreover, Marques Brownlee also talked about the limited apps that can be used. He said,
“So there is no Uber access. There is no Spotify access. There is no WhatsApp. There is no calendar. No Gmail. None of that stuff. It’s just… I can’t book a flight, I can’t buy something on Amazon. It just will not do any of that stuff that I just do on my phone.”
Reacting to this, Daniel Vassallo blasted Brownlee on X saying,
“I find it distasteful, almost unethical, to say this when you have 18 million subscribers. Hard to explain why, but with great reach comes great responsibility. Potentially killing someone else’s nascent project reeks of carelessness. First, do no harm.”
2) MKBHD Speeding in Children’s Zone
Marques’ video titled “How My Video Gear is Changing!” was sponsored by DJI and faced a lot of backlash. The reason behind it was that Marques Brownlee was recklessly speeding his car in a children’s zone. One of the comments on his video, which had more than 12K likes, read, “This can’t even be considered a sponsored video anymore. It’s literally just a ten-minute advertisement,” after which Marques edited the video to remove that clip.
Originally, it had shown him driving at a speed of 96 mph in a 35 mph zone, and he had ignored a sign warning drivers to slow down for children. However, when he realized that what he did was wrong, he took to X to apologize for the video.
3) Marques Brownlee’s $50 Wallpaper App
In October 2024, Marques again sparked online backlash for launching an app named “Panels.” It was a subscription-based app providing HD wallpapers for phones at a price of $50 for a year. He announced the launch of the app on Twitter and instantly received a ton of criticism.
Critics noted that the app was full of intrusive ads, overpriced, and was collecting a load of unnecessary data from the users.
Moreover, trolling Marques Brownlee, his followers also retweeted one of his older posts that said, “Golden rule #1 of the internet: Never try to charge for something that was already free.”
However, Brownlee took the backlash positively and later uploaded a video on YouTube saying that he would be reducing the price of the subscription and bringing in a number of changes to the app, as there was room for improvement.
