Here are five tips and tricks that will have a significant impact on your combat in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the fourth major installment of the Dragon Age franchise and the sequel to Dragon Age: Inquisition. Combat is a very important aspect of this action RPG, and narrative takes the backseat in some places. BioWare has put a lot of effort into the combat mechanisms in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. If you are just starting out with the game, these five tips will help you master the combat style in Dragon Age: The Veilguard quicker.

1) Master the Use of Primers and Detonators
Primers and Detonators, previously used by BioWare in Dragon Age: Inquisition, returns in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. This combination of attacks can be highly impactful. The Primers apply three status effects – Sundered, Overwhelmed, and Weakened. These need to be matched with the Detonator of a specific class.
- Mages apply Weakened and detonate Sundered.
- Rogues apply Sundered and detonate Overwhelmed.
- Warriors apply Overwhelmed and detonate Weakened.
Apply a Primer status effect on an enemy with any party member and then deal massive damage with the Detonator using another party member. The duration of the Primer status effect can be seen as a bubble next to the affected enemy’s health bar. Furthermore, each companion has additional effects on their Detonators. Assign the character skill and select the companion taking all the factors into account.
2) Refund Skill Points Freely Whenever Needed
You can switch your playstyle completely at any point in the game by refunding the skill points. There’s no charge for resetting your skill points. It is free, and you can do it as many times as you want until you are satisfied with your skill points distribution. You can also reset your companion’s skill tree and redistribute the points based on your playstyle.
Resetting the skill tree will allow you to try out various class abilities and builds. Explore and experiment so your gameplay feels fresh. You will face many enemies with many different resistances and weaknesses as you progress in the game, so you must be open to trying various builds and skills. Class specializations, which unlock at level 20, will give an added advantage.
3) Perfect Your Parrying and Dodging Skills
Parrying and dodging are essential combat mechanics in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. These may be a little difficult to master, but keep working on timing them right. Monitoring the indicators on your character’s head will help you get the parrying and dodging timing right.
You will spot yellow and red color bubbles appearing on your head when an enemy attack approaches. The yellow means you can parry the attack, whereas the red indicates that it can only be dodged. You can also change the timing windows of Dodge, Parry, and Perfect Defend using this option: Gameplay > Advanced Combat Settings > Combat Timing.
You can adjust enemy stats like damage, health, aggression, resistance, and vulnerability in the settings to make your battles more easy or challenging.
4) Make the Most of the Radial Menu
One of the best combat features of The Veilguard is the radial menu. If you ever felt overwhelmed by enemies or faced difficulties in fighting them, the radial menu can save you as it can pause everyone.
You can switch between the targets or learn about their weakness and resistance. The radial menu also allows you to command your companions to take out specific enemies. Since the enemies are slowed down, you can also take some time to analyze the situation and plan your next move.
With the radial menu open, you can see whether your ability will have an effect on the enemy or not. Always make sure you are using the ability with the green outline as it affects the enemy.
5) Get Familiar with Key Terminologies
You will come across a lot of terms when equipping gear, selecting skill tree nodes, and even during combat. These indicate the positive and negative status effects. Remembering all of these can be tough, but you do need to be familiar with the basic terminologies.
Luckily, you can see the details of any status effect during skill selection. Pressing the details button will clearly specify what that term means and how it impacts you and your enemy.
Knowing the various status effects terms will elevate your gameplay as you will know exactly what you want and what you are exactly doing when equipping various gear or selecting the skills at the skill tree nodes.
