Learn about the five best Transformation Spells in Black Myth Wukong – their abilities, best use cases, how to obtain them, and more.
There are two different types of Transformations in Black Myth Wukong. The first is the Transformation Spells, which completely “transform” the Destined One into a different playable NPC (usually a boss or elite enemy type) for a fairly long duration. The second type is called Spirits, which transform the Destined One into an elite enemy type for a very short duration of time. The Spirits are essentially a burst ability, which is like an ultimate ability. The Spirits can be used to gain a significant passive buff or deal massive amounts of damage. The Transformation Spells, on the other hand, grant a completely different playstyle, coupled with a separate healthbar and skill set.
Unlike Spirits, which are dependent on Qi, Transformations run on Might. Whereas Qi is recovered only upon dealing damage to enemies or performing Critical Hits, Might is recovered automatically, over time. Furthermore, there is also a Medicine called Mirage Pill that partially recovers Might upon use. As such, it’s much easier to reuse Transformation Spells during a battle, compared to the Spirit ability. Being one of the Spells the Destined One has access to, Transformations is tied to the “Spell wheel” activated by pressing R2+Circle or RT+B.
Furthermore, Transformation Spells are usually obtained by defeating specific main story or optional bosses in Black Myth Wukong. However, there are also a few of these Spells that are obtained by completing certain NPC questlines like the Dark Thunder or Ashen Slumber. While every Transformation Spell in Black Myth Wukong is effective in combat, some are inherently better than others. This mostly boils down to the abilities these Transformations have to offer.
In this article, we will cover the five best Transformations in Black Myth Wukong that you don’t want to miss out on.
Best Transformations in Black Myth Wukong
The best Transformations in Black Myth Wukong are Red Tides, Golden Lining, Azure Dome, Dark Thunder, and Ashen Slumber. Their abilities set them apart from the rest. All these Transformations not only come with plenty of defense but are also capable of dealing a ton of damage. For instance, the Red Tides Transformation turns the Destined One into Guangzhi. This, in turn, grants you the ability to deal Burn damage, which is one of the most powerful elemental (Four Banes) affinities in Black Myth Wukong.
Similarly, there’s Azure Dome, which turns the Destined One into the Stone Monkey. And as is the case with the Stone Monkey, it makes the Destined One completely immune to any elemental affinities. All these Transformations also have movesets that are, more or less, easy to execute in the heat of battle.
There are two main reasons to use a Transformation Spell – to deal elemental damage and to guarantee survivability during the tail-end of a boss fight. All these Transformations excel at doing both.
5) Ashen Slumber
- Transformation Spell: Azure Slumber
- Elemental affinity: Burn (Fire)
- Might cost: High
- How to obtain: Obtained in Chapter 3 (The New West) either by completing the Two-Headed Rat Guai’s questline or defeating the NPC in Pagoda Realm.
- Best use case(s): Most effective against mobs or bosses weak to stagger and Burn damage.
Ashen Slumber is easily one of the most powerful Transformation Spells in Black Myth Wukong when it comes to sheer strength. While the regular attacks of this Transformation do not apply any elemental status on enemies, its sheer damage is more than enough to stagger even the strongest of bosses. Furthermore, the Ashen Slumber has a unique trick up its sleeve. Before its Might is exhausted, the Ashen Slumber can “self-detonate”, which not only staggers and deals damage to nearby enemies but also engulfs them in flames.
Obtaining the Ashen Slumber is also quite easy. You essentially need to complete the Rat Guai questline in Chapter 2 (Yellow Wind Ridge), which is hard to miss.
After completing the Rat Guai’s quest, you will find this Transformation in the same cell that houses the Third Rat Prince in Chapter 3 (The New West). You need to defeat Captain Lotus-Vision to unlock the cell and obtain the Ashen Slumber Transformation.
4) Dark Thunder
- Transformation Spell: Dark Thunder
- Elemental affinity: Shock (Lightning)
- Might cost: High
- How to obtain: Obtained by completing the Horse Guai’s questline in Chapter 5 (The Flaming Mountains).
- Best use case(s): Most effective against bosses and elites that are weak to Shock damage.
Dark Thunder, much like Ashen Slumber, is an excellent choice if you want a Transformation that’s capable of dishing out plenty of damage and staggering enemies easily. However, Dark Thunder is significantly stronger compared to Ashen Slumber when it comes to absorbing attacks. In its regular form, this Transformation doesn’t deal as much damage as some of the other Spells in Black Myth Wukong. However, once its Focus gauge is maxed out, the Dark Thunder can imbue his weapon, i.e., the whip, with lightning. Doing so enables the Transformation to deal significantly more damage while also inflicting Shock status on enemies.
To obtain the Dark Thunder Transformation Spell, you need to complete the Horse Guai’s questline. The Horse Guai’s quest starts in Chapter 1 (Black Wind Mountain), and then continues until you arrive at Chapter 5 (The Flaming Mountains). Before you complete the Horse Guai’s quest, you first need to defeat the Keeper of the Flaming Mountains and the Yin-Yang Fish. After defeating the boss, talk to the Horse Guai at the broken down Flaming Cart near the Palance Entrance Shrine to obtain the Dark Thunder.
3) Azure Dome
- Transformation Spell: Azure Dome
- Elemental affinity: Frost and Burn (Fire)
- Might cost: High
- How to obtain: Obtained after defeating Erlang, the Sacred Divinity, and the Four Heavenly Kings.
- Best use case(s): Most effective against bosses and enemies that deal Four Banes (elemental) damage.
When it comes to sheer strength, without any form of elemental buffs, nothing compares to the Azure Dome Transformation. Azure Dome essentially transforms the Destined One into the Stone Monkey, giving him access to some really powerful attacks. Furthermore, the Stone Monkey is completely invulnerable to all Four Banes effects, making it the best option against bosses that deal elemental damage. To top it all off, the Stone Monkey can also use Spells like Rock Solid, Cloud Step, and A Pluck of Many. Furthermore, the Transformation can also imbue its fists with Frost or Flame to deal elemental damage.
Given that Azure Dome is easily one of the most powerful Transformation Spells in Black Myth Wukong, unlocking it takes quite a bit of work. You essentially have to work your way towards the true ending of the game. Doing so includes completing all optional Secret Areas, Maitreya’s questline in Chapter 3, and discovering the Grand Pagoda. After that, you need to head to Mei-Jian Peak and defeat Erlang, the Sacred Divinity and the Four Heavenly Kings to obtain the Azure Dome.
2) Golden Lining
- Transformation Spell: Golden Lining
- Elemental affinity: Shock (Lightning)
- Might cost: High
- How to obtain: Obtained upon completing the Loong questline and defeating the Yellow Loong in Chapter 4 (The Webbed Hollow).
- Best use case(s): Most effective against bosses that are weak to elemental and Shock damage.
Much like Azure Dome, Golden Lining is obtained after one of the toughest boss fights in Black Myth Wukong. And similar to the Stone Monkey Transformation, Golden Lining is incredibly powerful, albeit with some caveats.
Unlike other Transformations in the game, Golden Lining is highly skill-focused, meaning you can’t just mash the attack button with this Transformation to deal damage to the enemies. The trick to making proper use of Golden Lining is to use the “see-through” moveset, which charges the Transformation’s Focus gauge. Once the Focus gauge is maxed out, holding the heavy attack button initiates a flurry of attacks that not only deals a ton of damage but also inflicts Shock to enemies.
To obtain the Golden Lining Transformation, you need to complete the Loong questline. Firstly, you need to obtain the Loong Scales key item in Chapter 2 (Yellow Wind Ridge). After that, defeat Red, Black, and Cyan Loongs in Chapters 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Once that’s done, head to Chapter 4 (The Webbed Hollow) and make your way to the Relief of the Fallen Loong Keeper’s Shrine. This is where you will find the Yellow Loong. Defeat the Yellow Loong to obtain the Golden Lining Transformation.
1) Red Tides
- Transformation Spell: Red Tides
- Elemental affinity: Burn (Fire)
- Might cost: High
- How to obtain: Obtained upon defeating Gunagzhi in Chapter 1 (The Black Wind Mountain).
- Best use case(s): Most effective against bosses and enemies that are weak to stagger and Burn damage.
Red Tides is the very first Transformation Spell you get to unlock in Black Myth Wukong. Surprisingly enough, it is one of the most powerful Transformations in the entire game, even surpassing the likes of Azure Dome and Golden Lining when it comes to effectiveness. Red Tides not only deals elemental damage with each of its attacks (regular or heavy) but also builds up Focus incredibly fast. It can easily stagger enemies, and even bosses.
It is essentially the best Transformation for players who don’t want to get into the trouble of learning the “see-through” timings of the Golden Lining and simply want a Spell that deals a ton of damage that they can rely on for boss fights.
Red Tides is obtained upon defeating an optional boss in Chapter 1 (Black Wind Mountain) – Guangzhi. From the Outside the Forest Keeper’s Shrine, head straight north, and you will reach Guangzhi’s rest. Defeat the boss and grab his Flaming Twinblade to obtain the Red Tides Transformation.
