As of Season 1, Captain America is the fastest Vanguard in Marvel Rivals. Although his health pool is not the best among the tanks, his agility makes him a difficult target to deal with. He is not a “tank” in the traditional sense but can be a great distraction and hold aggro for longer periods. However, if you don’t know how to effectively play with him, you will be doing more harm than good to your team. So, let’s learn all about him.

How To Play Captain America in Marvel Rivals

Captain America’s Survivability

Captain America’s base HP of 675 may be disappointing at first. However, people forget that this character also has a shield. The Living Legend ability gives him an additional 400 HP combined with the shield. The only drawback here is that enemies can shoot him from the back to bypass his shield. However, those facing him from the front will find him at a whopping 1075 HP.

Captain America’s Ultimate is also all about being a tank. When he gets that unlimited HP regen for 10 seconds, he will usually be unkillable for the most part. There are rare occasions when Steve Rogers dies during his Ultimate. While his shield will recharge 50 HP every second, it requires a 5-second cooldown after being destroyed. Despite these shortcomings, Cap’s survivability in most matches is good.

Captain America’s Mobility

The Captain’s base mobility in the game is as slow as any other Vanguard you may find. However, what makes him stand out among other tanks is the fact that he can sprint indefinitely. That’s right! His Leading Dash ability does not have a cooldown, and he does not run out of stamina—perks of being a super soldier.

He also has indefinite use of the Fearless Leap ability, which can only be activated while Leading Dash is active. So, if your team is on overtime and you are all coming back from spawn, Captain America can rush in and defend the spot while everyone else walks to the objective. His Liberty Rush and Super-Soldier Slam can also be used for traversal in dire situations.

Captain America Playstyle and Combos

Being a Vanguard, Captain America has limited combos to use in a match. Since he is mostly a brawler, he can’t do much beyond punching most of the time. However, there are a few tricks you can show off in matches to intimidate enemies.

First and foremost, keep your Leading Dash always enabled. Most of your work will involve disrupting the enemy comp while occasionally defending your team.

Use your Fearless Leap ability and quickly follow it up with Super-Soldier Slam against any enemy. Continue punching the enemy afterward. If the enemy starts backing away, lead with Vibranium Energy Saw and immediately use Liberty Rush to catch them and continue your barrage of Sentinel Strikes.

Best Team Composition With Captain America in Marvel Rivals

ROLECHARACTERS
VanguardThor/Doctor Strange
DuelistsThe Punisher/Hawkeye, Storm/Scarlet Witch
StrategistsLoki, Cloak and Dagger

This team comp will look better when balanced. So, apart from Captain America, we will need one more Vanguard, two Duelists, and two Strategists for the perfect team composition. However, it is a little complex so pay attention.

In the case of Strategists, I have chosen both characters who can take good care of themselves in stressful situations. Apart from defending themselves and contributing to the overall DPS output, both Loki and Cloak & Dagger are pretty strategic healers and can heal even from around the corners using their specific unique abilities.

The rest of the team comp depends on the Vanguard you choose. If you pick Thor, who is another diving character, you will need DPS to assist the Strategists whenever needed. With Thor, The Punisher and Storm can stay at the back. The Punisher can keep pressure on the enemies with his high fire rate and switch to his shotgun if somebody infiltrates the team comp, while Storm can help out the divers from a hard-to-reach angle in the sky. Thor will also activate the team-up with both Storm and Captain America.

If your teammate picks Doctor Strange, one of the Duelists that stays at the back can take Hawkeye because he wouldn’t have to care much about protecting the Strategists from divers. He can instead continue damaging the enemy front and backlines. Scarlet Witch, on the other hand, can switch places as she wishes but mostly keeps pressure on the enemies and disrupts their team comp.

Captain America Counters in Marvel Rivals

Even though he has good mobility and overall HP, Cap is still not invincible. There are many ways to counter his character irrespective of which hero you have chosen. However, the following characters directly trouble him:

  • Iron Man
  • Iron Fist
  • Scarlet Witch
  • Luna Snow
  • Mantis
  • Peni Parker
  • The Punisher
  • Psylocke
  • Loki

Iron Man is a character that Cap will find hard to reach because he is a brawling hero. Although there are other characters who can deal damage from afar, Iron Man’s AoE primary attacks will be more effective against Steve than any other hero. The Punisher can also overwhelm Cap with his turret and shotgun.

Iron Fist can continue his barrage of punches on Captain America without many issues, even penetrating his shield. And if he tries to run away, his auto-lock-on system will help keep him within range. Scarlet Witch has a similar function. While she is not a brawler, her primary attack can continue dealing damage to Steve from a decent range even if he is hard to track because she doesn’t require precise aim.

Strategists like Luna Snow and Mantis have CC abilities to pause the Captain in his place. They will be effective against him in most situations. However, they might need some extra help. Peni Parker is on the list for the same reasons. Her CC is pretty broken (in an effective way). Plus, she doesn’t require a reload, so she can easily overwhelm Rogers’ shield. Don’t even get me started on the mines and the bionic nest.

Lastly, Psylocke is pretty quick and can get behind Cap quickly to deal damage against him and even follow him around for the most part. Loki, on the other hand, can summon his clones behind him to ensure that Captain America takes damage even while blocking.

Hold on. You don’t yet know all you need to know about Captain America in Marvel Rivals. While you have learned the basics, your gameplay wouldn’t be as fun without getting to know these tricks while playing as the most resilient soldier. So, take note of the following tricks:

  • Always keep your sprint or Leading Dash on. If you move back, you will move at normal speed. So, always turn around if you wish to escape an area fast. While this ability is active, you can also spam the primary attack button to hit at a much faster rate.
  • Try keeping your Living Legend shield ability up when diving head-first into enemy lines to deflect projectiles and save the allies behind you.
  • Keep using your Fearless Leap to become a much harder target to hit.
  • Try saving your Vibranium Energy Saw for flying characters, if there are any on the enemy team.
  • Always use your Ultimate when all allies are near you and keep running until the Ability stops by itself.
  • Your shield can deflect several scary Ultimates including Scarlet Witch’s, Magneto’s Iron Man’s, and so on. So, whenever you hear the voice cues, protect your allies by raising your shield in front of them.
  • This Living Legend Ability can even turn enemy Moon Knight’s ankh into one of your own if it touches your shield.
