Jin Dahaad is arguably one of the toughest challenges you will face in Monster Hunter Wilds, and rightfully so. Not only is it one of the new Leviathan class monsters introduced in the series, but it’s also the Apex of the Iceshard Cliffs region. And as Apex Monsters go, they tend to be incredibly aggressive and powerful.

Furthermore, Jin Dahaad is also quite intimidating, considering it’s the largest monster in the entire roster, surpassing even the Equal Dragon Weapon, Zoh Shia. While you do get a taste of the Leviathan’s power in the Low Rank, it’s only in the High Rank that you get to slay the Jin Dahaad, granted you’re powerful enough to do so.

Naturally, the High Rank version of Jin Dahaad is significantly more powerful and tough compared to its Low Rank counterpart. However, if you’re using a Great Sword, you can craft a build that can easily overpower the monster and defeat it. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to craft the best Great Sword build to defeat Jin Dahaad in Monster Hunter Wilds.

For the Great Sword build, we chose the full Rathalos set alongside the Red Wings Great Sword. Furthermore, we also doubled down on Ice Resistance to help alleviate the amount of damage you receive from Jin Dahaad’s ice-breath attacks. The reason we chose the Rathalos set is due to its superior Defensive stats and plenty of Decoration slots.

We went with the Rathalos β set, as it comes with more Decoration slots with some points less in certain skills compared to the α variant. As for the Red Wings, we chose the Great Sword due to its impressive Blaze (Fireblight) damage value, as well as the 10% Affinity bonus, which comes in incredibly handy against Jin Dahaad.

We also paired the entire build with Rocksteady Mantle and the Defense Charm 4, which grants additional defense for the Hunter. Essentially, with this build our goal is to maximize defense and the amount of elemental damage you can deal, on top of the base raw damage of the Great Sword. The Quematrice, or the Guardian Rathalos Great Sword, is a good alternative to Red Wings. However, during our testing, we found Red Wings to be more efficient against Jin Dahaad, due to its higher elemental damage and Affinity.

Here’s a look at the components of the Great Sword build.

How To Use the Great Sword Build To Easily Defeat Jin Dahaad

Here are some helpful tips to properly use the Great Sword build against Jin Dahaad:

  • As Great Swords go, always start the battle with a mounting attack. This lets you create plenty of wounds on Jin Dahaad’s back and head, which you can destroy after a dismount. This way, you’ve already dealt a good chunk of Fireblight damage right at the start of the battle.

  • Once Jin Dahaad moves to the second arena, quickly grasp something for your Slinger or use a Flash Bomb to awaken the Hirabami nearby. This will initiate a turf war between the Hirabami and Jin Dahaad, which is essentially free damage.

  • With the Great Sword build, prioritize dealing damage in short bursts via the full TCS combo. Target the hind legs and the tail first, and eventually make your way to the head. That way you’re safe (for the most part) from the ice-breath attacks.

  • We’ve included plenty of Ice Resistance in this build so you won’t have to worry about taking additional damage from Jin Dahaad’s breath and slam attacks. As such, you can basically stay at a medium distance from the Leviathan at all times, without much hassle.

  • While the offset attacks and guard counters (power clash) do look cool, we recommend avoiding those combos for this battle, at least using this build. Instead, it’s best to just rely on good-old TCS and Focus Strikes.

Additional Tips

Using this build, we were able to defeat Jin Dahaad quite consistently at under the 20-minute mark. If you summoned the Support Hunters, you can further shave a few more minutes off of the battle. Additionally, this build holds really well in co-op/SOS hunts as well. If you’re looking for an alternative to Red Wing I, there are a few other options; you can pick the Guardian Rathalos Great Sword. However, you will need to orient your skills towards Affinity to properly use that weapon.
