Everything you need to know about the Gems in Monster Hunter Wilds, including the best methods to farm the rare monster material.

The monster Gems are easily among the rarest crafting resources in Monster Hunter games, including the latest, Monster Hunter Wilds. Although the latest entry in the franchise has significantly streamlined the resource-gathering process, getting the rare monster materials is still quite arduous. Depending on the game’s RNG, getting the rare monster parts can take you somewhere from a couple of hours to almost a week.
Among the rarest of these monster materials are the Gems, which have the lowest drop chance of merely 3%, regardless of whether you slay or capture the monster. Much like the Gold Crowns, the Gems are extremely rare and aren’t a guaranteed drop. However, thanks to the new Investigations system, there are a few ways to “farm” the monster Gems.
Here’s everything you need to know about the monster Gems in Monster Hunter Wilds, and how you can farm them.
How To Obtain Monster Gems in Monster Hunter Wilds?

The Gems have a 3% drop chance upon defeating a monster (slay or capture). However, certain monsters do have a slightly higher drop rate of Gems, at 5%, albeit only if you sever the tail. Naturally, this only applies to monsters that do have a tail, which can also be carved.
Monsters like the Chatacabra, Lala Barina, Doshaguma, Uth Duna, Gypceros, Nerscylla, etc., do not have a tail, or one that can be carved. For these monsters, you have to rely solely on the 3% RNG factor. Furthermore, carving a tail might have a higher drop chance of Gems, but it’s not a guaranteed drop. Most of the time, you will be rewarded with the “monster tail” as a reward for carving.
In past Monster Hunter games, especially in Monster Hunter Rise, capturing monsters had a higher chance of yielding a Gem. However, that doesn’t seem to apply to Monster Hunter Wilds. In fact, during our testing, we found slaying a monster and manually carving to be the more reliable method of getting Gems. That being said, there are a couple of ways to ensure you get a guaranteed Gem in Monster Hunter Wilds, albeit with some caveats.
Best Farming Methods for Monster Gems

There are essentially two different ways to guarantee a monster Gem drop in Monster Hunter Wilds. The first method involves spamming the weather cycle system, and the second method is using the game’s multiplayer Investigations. Unfortunately, for both of these methods, you need to reach the endgame, which can take around 30-40 hours depending on your skill and the amount of optional hunts you choose to undertake.
Once you’re in the endgame, you will be able to save and share Investigations. This is the system we’re going to be using to make sure we get a guaranteed Gem drop from slaying or capturing monsters. These two methods guarantee at least one Gem per hunt. However, it might take some time to get the right set of Investigations, since those too are based on RNG. Thankfully, Investigations are also viable in multiplayer, and you can easily sort SOS requests based on the rewards you want. Here’s a more in-depth explanation of the two Gem farming methods:
Weather Cycle and Investigations
The first, and perhaps the more arduous method out of the two, is to farm Investigations via weather cycling. When it comes to Investigations, you can check the primary rewards you get upon completion. One of these rewards happens to be the monster Gems.
While looking for monsters to save as Investigations, you can check the primary (bonus) rewards that you earn simply by completing the hunt. These rewards show up in the Investigation’s description. While it is still quite rare, some Investigations come with the monster Gem as a bonus reward. Saving and subsequently completing these Investigations gives you access to 3 guaranteed Gems.
Multiplayer Investigations
The Investigations trick also works for the multiplayer hunts as well. However, it’s a much easier and faster way to accumulate these rare resources. Essentially, while looking for SOS hunts, filter the quests by Investigations (High Rank), which will allow you to check the rewards you get upon completing the said hunt. Go through the list of all the available SOS requests, and see if any of them have the Gem you’re looking for as a completion reward. It might take some retries to find the right SOS request, but given that the game is relatively new and maintains a healthy active player base, it shouldn’t be too difficult. Do note that rewards can only be checked for quests that are Investigations.
For Optional Quests or Assignments, you cannot check the rewards before setting out on the hunt.
