Ominous Trial Keys unlock rare Trial Chamber vaults in Minecraft, offering top-tier loot after defeating waves of enhanced mobs.

Trial Chambers were added to Minecraft with the 1.21 Tricky Trials update. They spawn in the deepslate layer underground between Y-level -20 and Y-level -40 and can be found using an Explorer Map traded by a Cartographer Villager. These contain Trial Spawners, which create combat challenges by spawning a variety of hostile mobs.
After the player defeats all the mobs, the Trial Spawners reward them with a Trial Key, which they can use to open a Trial Vault for rewards. However, if certain conditions are met, the Trial Vault yields an Ominous Trial Key. The player can then use this rarer key to unlock Ominous Vaults that contain precious items.
Minecraft Ominous Trial Key Guide

Here is a brief summary of what you will need to do in order to get the Ominous Trial Key and use it:
- Find a Trial Vault
- Get the Bad Omen effect before triggering the Trial Spawner.
- Complete the Trial by defeating all the spawning mobs.
- Collect the Ominous Trial Key from the Ominous Trial Spawner.
- Find and open an Ominous Vault with the Ominous Trial Key.
You can come across the Trial Chamber while mining within the deepslate layer or by following an Explorer Map obtained from a Cartographer Villager. To get the Bad Omen effect, drink an Ominous Bottle. Ominous Bottles are dropped by Raid Captains and can be found within the Trial Chamber itself.
When you approach a Trial Spawner with the Bad Omen effect, blue fire particles appear around it, and it transforms the Trial Chamber into a Trial Omen. This converts all the Trial Spawners into Ominous Trial Spawners. You will now be facing much stronger enemies and should be armed to the teeth to defeat them.
Collect the Ominous Trial Key

After felling all hostile mobs, approach a spawner. There is a 30% chance that an Ominous Trial Spawner will provide an Ominous Trial Key. In a chamber with multiple spawners, make sure to visit each one and collect all the keys. Trial Keys are used on regular vaults—which have a skull with orange eyes and an orange strip underneath—to get an assortment of loot that will be different each time.
Ominous Trial keys unlock Ominous vaults, which are rarer and harder to find than regular vaults. Ominous vaults have ruby red eyes on their skulls and a turquoise blue strip underneath. Once you have the Ominous Trial Key, explore the Trial Chamber to find an Ominous Vault. There is usually one per chamber. Open the Ominous Vault to receive higher-quality loot, which will likely include a Heavy Core and diamonds. Here are some details about the keys to keep in mind:
- Opening a vault consumes a Trial Key.
- Each player can open a Trial Vault only once. In multiplayer, all players can open the same vault once, provided each has a Trial Key.
- When you approach a Trial Vault with the appropriate key in hand, it lights up. The skull’s eyes glow, and its jaw opens, revealing a keyhole.
