Master potion-making in Oblivion Remastered by learning ingredient effects, using apparatuses, and leveling your Alchemy skill.

Alchemy in Oblivion Remastered is the skill of potion making, which can do everything from healing the player and restoring magicka to fortifying attributes and poisoning weapons. With just a Mortar and Pestle and a few ingredients, players can brew powerful concoctions that scale with their Alchemy skill and equipment. This guide breaks down everything from ingredient effects to apparatus bonuses, showing how each element impacts potion potency and value.
Oblivion Remastered Alchemy Guide

Alchemy in Oblivion Remastered is similar to the original, but with a major UI overhaul that makes filtering ingredients and brewing the exact potion you want much simpler. All you need to start making potions are a Mortar and Pestle, and some ingredients. Here are the absolute basics:
- Use the Mortar and Pestle from your inventory to open the alchemy tab.
- Select a minimum of two ingredients with the same effect to make a potion with that effect.
- The effects section will provide a preview of the effects the potion will have.
- Click on “Create” to receive the potion.
Your Alchemy Skill level and Alchemy apparatus determine the potency of any potion you brew. Ingredients only dictate the effects a potion will have, and their magnitude and duration are independent of the ingredients used. If adding another ingredient does not add any effects to a potion, the ingredient will go to waste if you craft a potion using it.
Alchemy Level
Your Alchemy skill level increases by brewing potions and eating ingredients. It determines how many of the four effects of an ingredient you can identify, the magnitude and duration of potions, and other bonuses.
Alchemy Expertise | Alchemy Level | Ingredient Effects Recognized | Bonuses |
---|---|---|---|
Novice | 0–25 | 1 | – None |
Apprentice | 25–49 | 2 | – Chance to craft an additional potion |
Journeyman | 50-74 | 3 | – (All previous) – More simultaneous potion effects |
Expert | 75-99 | 4 | – (All previous) – Will always craft an additional potion |
Master | 100 | 4 | – (All previous) – Even more simultaneous potion effects – Can craft potions with just one ingredient |
The higher your Alchemy skill level when crafting a potion, the greater its value in gold.
Alchemy Apparatus

Having Alchemy apparatus in your inventory or nearby while brewing potions will provide various bonuses. When active, their icon can be seen on the top of the alchemy menu. Here are all the Alchemy apparatus and their uses:
- Mortar and Pestle: Enables alchemy. Adds to Alchemy skill.
- Retort: Increases the duration and magnitude of all positive effects of a potion.
- Calcinator: Increases the duration and magnitude of all effects of a potion.
- Alembic: Decreases the duration and magnitude of all negative effects of a potion.
All the apparatus are also ranked from Novice and Master. A higher-level apparatus will boost its bonuses to a greater extent. For example, a Novice Mortar and Pestle adds 2.5 points to Alchemy Skill, while a Master Mortar and Pestle adds 25. You can find all the apparatuses easily in the Cloud Ruler Temple. They can also be bought from alchemy merchants. Since they are heavy, place them in your house and brew your potions there so you can benefit from their bonuses.
