Characters are your classes in The First Descendant, providing skills, passives, and ultimate abilities. You have three base game classes to choose from, and as you progress, you can unlock more characters. Jayber isn’t a starting class, and you’ll need to advance the main story and save 100,000 credits to purchase him, but it will be worth it!

The First Descendant class system resembles games like Destiny 2 and Warframe. You will have three abilities, each with cooldowns based on their power. You can use multiple guns, and each class has pros, cons, and optimal usage. In this guide, we will describe how to play Jayber’s character, how to unlock him, and who would enjoy this play style.

Should you play Jayber in The First Descendant?

Jayber is the ideal Descendant character for players who want to heal others, not rely on guns, and enjoy skill-based combat. With Jayber, your weapons won’t be the primary focus, but your skills. Therefore, this character is useful for players who struggle with aiming or like the thought of using turrets. Moreover, Jayber does good, consistent damage with powerful healing, making him useful.

However, Jayber won’t do as much damage as Bunny or have anywhere near the speed. We recommend using Jayber if you enjoy healing in other FPS/RPG games or don’t want to rely on aiming for damage.

Who is Jayber? – Story

Jayber, a genius with awkward social skills, has recently improved his interactions. Born with a mysterious disease rumored to be spread by the Vulgus, Jayber was separated from his family for special drug treatment from the Magisters due to a brain anomaly.

At age five, Jayber’s Arche ability manifested. Frequent equipment malfunctions during his examination prompted the Magisters to investigate, revealing his genius mind and ability to control machinery remotely.

Despite his social shortcomings, a recent personnel report noted that Jayber’s attitude is slowly changing after surviving a crisis on a mission with the help of his teammates.

How to Play Jayber – Character Gameplay

Jayber launches two types of turrets that do damage or heal, making him a unique and powerful character in the First Descendant. Jayber’s primary objective is to use both turrets (skills) at the same time. With both turrets out, the Turret Sync passive is active, increasing attack damage for both assault and medical turrets. Moreover, you can then combo this with your Reactive ultimate skill, recalling turrets to do damage and boosting their effectiveness for a time.

Cooldowns – your biggest priority when gearing Jayber is skill cooldown reduction. These augments and mods can help get out and keep both turrets firing and providing support. The turrets act as a distraction and passive bonus damage and healing and are the cornerstone of your build.

Enhance the Turrets – use the skill multi-purpose gun to hit a turret, boosting its power. You want to situationally apply this depending if you need more damage or healing.

Boss Fight – if you suspect a boss fight, save both turrets and activate them at the same time to trigger the passive. You can activate your ultimate and have them enhanced for awhile. Then, use a multi-purpose gun for your damage or healing depending on your needs.

Jayber Passive and Active Skills

All characters in The First Descendant have one passive skill and four active skills.

  • Passive skills: Passive buffs and bonuses are automatically applied or under certain conditions.
  • Active and Ultimate skills: These are activated by a player (effects on demand) and vary by character. Each character has unique skills to match their role and playstyle.

The main focus is reduced skill cool down and skill power. Jayber won’t be a gun-centric character, therefore amplifying his skill power. With more skill power, you will be less reliant on your weapon loadout for damage and more skill spam. Additionally, anything that reduces skill cooldown will keep uptime high on your turrets, giving you better utility, survivability, and damage.

Passive Skill

Turret Sync – ATK increases when assault turret and medical turret are both summoned.

  • Usage – your cooldowns won’t always match up with the Assault turret on a 20-second cooldown and the medical turret on a 45-second cooldown. Therefore, keep your medical turret off cooldown if you need extra damage, and throw them both down and shot Assault Turret with multi-purpose gun if needing a damage boost.

Active Skills

Assault Turret – Summons an assault turret to attack the enemy. If enhanced, it launches attacks into nearby area.

  • Usage – with a 20-second cooldown that lasts 15 seconds, this needs to be up as much as possible. You can increase damage or heal assault turns with a multi-purpose gun.

Medical Turret – Summons a medical turret to heal allies and distract enemies. If enhanced, it restores Mana.

  • Usage – use sparingly when needing more survivability or damage combined with an assault turret. You will see a high MP cost and cooldown, but a medical turret can taunt and distract enemies in the 15-meter range.

Multi-Purpose Gun – Changes gun to a Multi-Purpose Gun. If hit by a Multi-Purpose Gun, turret enters an enhanced state.

  • Usage – this gun can enhance turrets, increasing their effectiveness and return HP. You will have an MP cost every shot, so use sparingly with the priority turret or both if needing some serious support.

Ultimate Skill

Reactivate Recalls all summoned turrets and inflicts powerful damage to nearby enemies. After using Total Recall, you enter Overhaul state, where turrets are summoned in their enhanced states.

  • Usage – your main nuke skill that should be used when needing the most damage possible.
