You can either save the Mayor in Dragon Age: The Veilguard from the fate he condemned his town to or leave him there to be consumed by blight.

The Dragon Age franchise is best known for its high-fantasy narrative, which is made even more exciting by its flexibility and adherence to player choice. Dragon Age: The Veilguard sticks to tradition and introduces players to the importance of their choices very early on. The Shadows Crossing quest early in the game is the perfect example for this. In this quest, you stumble across the town lost to blight and learn later on that it was its Mayor Julius that sacrificed it. The Mayor in Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a tragic character that you later consume by blight. Through this choice, Dragon Age: The Veilguard informs you of the intricacies and impacts of your choices, both on the world and your companions.

In this guide, we shall go over the difficult choice of saving or leaving the mayor in the Shadows Crossing quest, as well as the consequences of each choice.

Save the Mayor

Despite all of the Mayor’s actions that doomed D’meta’s Crossing, you have the chance to be merciful and rescue him from the very fate that he condemned his town to. If you choose to save the Mayor, you will be met with heavy resistance from Bellara, who will voice her disapproval and remind you of Julius’s crimes. Harding will also echo the sentiment and will express disapproval. Neve, on the other hand, will greatly approve of your choice.

Leave the Mayor

If you choose to exact justice and leave the Mayor to his ironic fate, Neve will disapprove of your choice. Neve will then inform you that Julius did not condemn the village in full conscience and was instead simply a pawn for the gods. Following through with the choice and leaving the Mayor to blight, however, will raise your approval level with Harding and Bellara. The Mayor, consumed by blight, will later return as a boss for the ‘A Growing Corruption’ side quest later on in the game.

Banish the Mayor

If you chose the Grey Wardens class at the start of the game, you will get access to a third choice in this scenario: Banish the Mayor to the Grey Wardens. This choice will raise your approval with Neve while reducing your approval with Bellara and Harding. Banishing the Mayor will grant him a chance at redemption, and he will follow through by coming to the aid of the Grey Wardens later in the story.

What Should You Choose?

If part of the Grey Wardens class, we recommend banishing the Mayor, as it makes for a satisfying narrative arc for Julius, allowing him to redeem himself. However, if this choice is not available, we recommend leaving the Mayor to his fate. As cruel as it may seem, it does give you access to another quest later down the line, which we believe is worth visiting.
