Discover everything about crafting and how it can be used to upgrade your gear and improve your build in Dragon Age: The Veilguard!
The ability to craft items and equipment in games is a staple of the RPG genre. Games like the Elder Scrolls, Dragon’s Dogma, and even previous Dragon Age games have all had crafting systems baked into them in some form or another. Dragon Age: The Veilguard keeps up the tradition of having a crafting system in the game, but has a very unique way of applying it. Items are not made from scratch in DA: The Veilguard, but they can be upgraded in various ways. In this guide, we will explore how crafting works and how you can use it to improve your abilities in Dragon Age: The Veilguard!
How Crafting Works in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
Items and equipment in Dragon Age: The Veilguard cannot be crafted from base materials. Equipment must be found or purchased initially to be made available to Rook and their companions. Additionally, duplicates of those items can be purchased and found in chest to upgrade the quality of the items. In addition to quality, however, certain types of equipment have levels that can be upgraded, and the crafting system is utilized here.
Upgrading Equipment Level
To upgrade a piece of equipment’s level, you will need access to the Caretaker’s Workshop at the Lighthouse. Additionally, you will need to have whatever materials are required to level up the equipment. For example, to level up the Jumper’s Deft Leathers medium armor to the Jumper’s Deft Leathers +1, you will need 4 Imperial Weaves and 5 Flawless Crystals. If you have met both of these criteria, you can upgrade the item increasing its base statistics.
Gear level is limited to +1 until you upgrade the Caretaker’s workshop by increasing its Shop Rank. To increase the Workshop’s rank you must find Mementos scattered throughout Thedas. After acquiring enough Mementos you can upgrade the Workshop. The amount of Mementos requires increases for each rank. The maximum rank of the Caretaker’s Workshop is Shop Rank 10.
You should always upgrade the Shop Rank of the workshop when you can as any item found after the upgrade will be at the level that the shop rank can upgrade gear level to. For example, if the Caretaker’s Workshop is at Rank 2 then every piece of equipment found while its at that level will be “+2”. This means you will only need to upgrade items you acquired before the Workshop is at level 2. That said, don’t upgrade every piece of equipment you have already acquired as any duplicate item found or purchased will automatically upgrade the item to the current maximum equipment level.
Increasing Equipment Quality
Equipment quality improves when you acquire a duplicate piece of that equipment. This upgrade occurs whether the item is purchased or found in a chest. Increasing an item’s quality grants it access to additional stats and effects. This occurs automatically and the duplicate item in essence replaces the old version of the item. For example, in the picture above with the Antivan Parade Helm, when it improves to Uncommon or “green” quality; the helmet gains a “+25% Flaming Weapons duration” effect. Upgrading your equipment in this way is one of the best ways to improve you build.
How Do You Unlock Crafting in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
You unlock crafting in Dragon Age the Veilguard by gaining access to the Caretaker’s Workshop in Solace’s Lighthouse. It is accessible just before Bellara fixes the Eluvian and you first meet the Caretaker. Once it is unlocked, it can accessed at any time simply by going to it. Upgrading equipment is unlocked from the beginning, but you will need to upgrade the Workshop to level 4 in order to get access to Enchanting.
What All Can You Upgrade in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
Dragon Age the Veilguard has several pieces of gear that Rook and their companions can equip and use. As stated previously, to upgrade the equipment level of an item, upgrade the Caretaker’s workshop to the desired level. An item’s quality, for instance going from Uncommon to Rare, can only be upgraded by finding or purchasing a weapon that has already been acquired.

What Is the Transmog System in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
The Transmog, short for Transmogrification, System is the ability in Dragon Age: The Veilguard to have your appearance and gear statistics be separate from each other. For instance, the statistics for a certain armor piece or weapon may be exactly what you need for your build, but you don’t care how it looks. You can use the Transmog system to alter how that specific piece looks to any weapon of the same type you have already earned. There are also specific appearance items, or “skins”, that you will find throughout your adventures that can be applied this way.
In order to use the Transmog system you must have progressed far enough into the story to have established yourself at Solace’s Lighthouse and unlocked Rook’s room. Inside of Rook’s room there is a wardrobe that can be accessed which will allow Rook to change the appearance of their own and their companions’ weapons and armor. You can also change the look of Rook’s casualwear while inside of the Lighthouse.
