Hunter x Hunter is a deeply influential anime created by Yoshihiro Togashi. The story has gone on to inspire multiple anime such as Naruto and Jujutsu Kaisen and remains a landmark in the industry.

Due to this, the series has also received multiple adaptations and movies. The first Hunter x Hunter anime aired from October 16, 1999, to August 18, 2004, with a total of 92 episodes. This was animated by Nippon Animation.

The remake was made by Studio Madhouse and ran from Oct 2, 2011, to Sep 24, 2014. This modern rendition was more appreciated by fans but went on hiatus after 148 episodes.

Between these two series, fans often find it hard to navigate the multiple filler episodes. We have prepared a list of all the filler episodes in Hunter x Hunter.

Complete Hunter x Hunter 1999 Filler List

A filler is classified as an episode or arc that does not serve any purpose in the story. It is created by the animation production company and does not follow the manga. It provides a break when the anime has caught up to the manga. This would allow more source material to be developed before the anime goes back to adapting canon content.

The original Hunter x Hunter anime had the following filler episodes:

  • Episode 2
  • Episode 7
  • Episodes 18-20

Additionally, some episodes are partially canon and partially filler:

  • Episodes 4-6
  • Episodes 11-12
  • Episodes 26-27
  • Episodes 32-34
  • Episode 46

Hence Hunter x Hunter 1999 has a total of 5 filler episodes and 11 mixed canon and filler episodes.

The 2011 version of Hunter x Hunter is a retelling of the story and does not continue after the 1999 version. Hence, you can dive into it without watching any prequels.

Madhouse’s Hunter x Hunter has a very low filler percentage despite having more episodes and arcs adapted compared to the 1999 version. These are:

  • Episode 13
  • Episode 26

The only episode with a mix of canon and filler content is:

  • Episode 12

In total, Hunter x Hunter 2011 has 2 filler episodes and 1 mixed canon and filler episode.

Are Hunter x Hunter Movies Fillers?

The Hunter x Hunter movies are not connected to the primary story and are standalone. This makes them filler content.

They allow us to spend more time with our characters while showing us different sides of them. Hence, while they might not be as premium as the main series, they are enjoyable in their own right.

Do note that the Hunter x Hunter movies still reference events from the main show and may spoil some viewers. Therefore, they should not be watched before the main anime.

There are two Hunter x Hunter movies:

  • Hunter x Hunter Movie 1: Phantom Rouge
  • Hunter x Hunter Movie 2: The Last Mission

Should You Watch the Filler Episodes?

The 2011 version of Hunter x Hunter has only two filler episodes, and both of these are recaps of existing events in the anime. Hence, these can be skipped by fans who don’t want to lose their immersion in the series.

The 1999 version, on the other hand, carried on the themes from the main episodes and was fascinating. They showed us the side-stories of our main characters and were not inconsistent from the canon content. A few of these filler episodes also indirectly involved Togashi. Due to this, while they can still be skipped by those who want to strictly stick with canonicity, they are worth watching for fans who want to understand the characters on a deeper level.

Is the Hunter x Hunter Manga Still Ongoing?

The Hunter x Hunter manga had suffered several hiatuses due to the creator’s ill health. This often made it seem like the series would inevitably be canceled.

However, fans can rejoice as Yoshihiro Togashi has gradually started drawing again and the manga has resumed publication.

The Hunter x Hunter manga is currently ongoing with 406 chapters. It covers the Succession Contest Arc and follows Kurapika and Leorio’s adventures in the Dark Continent as they accompany Isaac Netero’s son and princes of the Kakin Empire.  With mysterious beasts, dangerous assassins, and the Phantom Troupe, however, their expedition is set to be filled with hurdles.
