Alteration is a highly utilitarian school of magic in Oblivion Remastered, which shores up several weaknesses of magic users. If you can’t lockpick like a thief, Open Lock spells can bypass the entire lockpicking mechanic. The Shield spells increase your damage resistance while wearing only flimsy robes, and Water Breathing allows you to breathe underwater like an Argonian.
Improving the Alteration skill not only unlocks access to higher-tier utility spells but also reduces the Magicka cost of casting them. Players often combine Alteration with Illusion or Destruction to build versatile mages. However, it can be challenging to level up Alteration, as its spells aren’t used too regularly. As with other skills in the game, Alteration can be trained by speaking to specific NPCs willing to offer lessons, for a price.

Tooth-in-the-Sea offers master training upon completing the Alteration Training quest. However, finding him can be a challenge. He swims in the Niben Bay from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., then heads to his camp east of the Flooded Mine and falls asleep. He will only offer training while awake.
To complete the Alteration Training quest, you need to have an Alteration skill of 70 and survive underwater for three hours. Argonians need not take the test, while other races can pass by obtaining an item with the permanent Water Breathing effect, such as the Jewel of the Rumare, Fin Gleam, or Nistor’s Boots. Once you have completed the quest, Tooth-in-the-Sea will agree to train you further.
How To Improve Alteration in Oblivion Remastered
The Cheydinhal Mages Guild specializes in Alteration magic and is ideal for purchasing new spells at the Journeyman skill level. Here are some tips to improve Alteration:
- Level up Alteration easily by repeatedly casting low-cost spells like Feather or Shield as you adventure.
- Find and read Alteration skill books for free level-ups.
- The Ayleid Crown of Lindai and Ayleid Crown of Nenalata, found during the Secrets of the Ayleids quest, are artifact helmets that boost Alteration by 15 points.
