The show follows Tanjiro Kamado, whose family is killed by Muzan, the leader of the demons, and whose sister, Nezuko, is turned into one. Now, he is adamant he will cure her and avenge his family. He joins the Demon Slayer Corps and sets off on a harrowing journey to fulfill his goals.
Similar to how My Hero Academia has a weak but determined protagonist, so does Demon Slayer. There are several breathing styles that the Demon Slayers utilize, which act in a way similar to Quirks. Essentially, every Soul Reaper has a unique sword (Zanpakuto) that does something completely different based on their personality. Hunter X Hunter centers around Gon Freecss, a young boy who learns that his long-missing father, whom he believed to be dead, is in fact alive and a legendary “Hunter.” Gon wants to find him, so Gon takes the notoriously difficult Hunter Exam to follow in his father’s footsteps and gain access to the means to reach his father.
Similar to My Hero Academia, Hunter X Hunter also has deep training regimens and elaborate power systems. As one of the most popular action animes ever produced, Dragon Ball pioneered so many of the tropes that My Hero Academia builds on. Each Fire Force company has its own internal structure, politics, and powers, much like the different hero agencies in My Hero Academia. The fight scenes also feature a visually stunning display of pyrokinetic abilities that are brilliantly animated. The animation matches the crispy sound quality, which also matches not just the flames but the flow of movement to create something special in every single fight.
Similar to My Hero Academia, there is a combination of action, mystery, and conspiracy as Shinra uncovers the truth behind the Infernals and his family’s tragic past. The show balances serious moments with humor sometimes, similar to My Hero Academia, keeping things moving along without getting too dark.
