Jujutsu Kaisen has an abundance of layered characters bred out of its dark world of cursed energy and sorcerers. Suguru Geto is one such person whose life was a very complex journey. However, his death only made things even more convoluted, leaving fans to wonder whether he deserved his fate in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Suguru Geto’s death, though tragic, was undoubtedly something he deserved in Jujutsu Kaisen. At the same time, considering his “revival” after this, his final fate is also a topic of heavy debate. Let us take a closer look into this.

Who Is Suguru Geto in Jujutsu Kaisen?

Suguru Geto was originally a student of Jujutsu High along with Gojo and Shoko, taught under Masamichi Yaga. He was considered one of the strongest in his batch, spending his days exorcising dangerous curses and having fun with Gojo.

While Geto was initially a firm believer in the Jujutsu Code of protecting non-sorcerers, his beliefs were completely shattered when he was ordered to protect the Star Plasma Vessel. During his mission of saving and transporting Riko Amanai, Tengen’s new vessel, Geto formed a close bond with her.

Hence, when Riko shared that she didn’t wish to sacrifice her life for the sake of Tengen, Geto accepted her wishes. Right when he was preparing to escort her back, Toji intervened and killed her. Geto was also immensely hurt by Toji, but Gojo’s sudden enlightenment allowed them to kill him.

Soon after this, Geto ran into the Star Religious group applauding the death of Riko. This thoroughly disgusted him, making him wonder for whom he was fighting so hard. Later conversations with Yuki also made him realize that curses only existed because of non-sorcerers.

Convinced that Jujutsu sorcerers were superior and non-sorcerers did not need to exist, Geto completely changed his ideals. He became a villain and mass murderer, taking the lives of humans and collecting powerful curses.

Following Geto’s disillusionment with society, he came to know of the existence of Yuta and his special-class curse, Rika. Since gaining her would greatly assist his efforts, he unleashed the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons.

While setting curses free all across Japan, he attacked Yuta at Jujutsu High. Unfortunately, he was overpowered by Yuta’s growth and Rika’s fearsome abilities. While attempting to escape, he ran into Gojo. Having been severely injured, Geto could do nothing but resign himself to his fate.

He had a bittersweet parting with his former best friend, after which the story implied that Gojo killed Geto. However, as we found soon after, this was not the end of Geto. Gojo had not taken his friend’s dead body with him, leaving its location ambiguous.

At this point, Kenjaku made use of the body and placed his brain inside it. While none of Geto’s consciousness remained, his appearance was the exact same. Kenjaku had done this in order to momentarily stun Gojo during the Shibuya Arc, allowing them to trap him in the Prison Realm.

Kenjaku was one of Jujutsu Kaisen’s smartest characters, trapping Gojo, creating the Culling Game, and freeing Sukuna purely for his own amusement. He had also come dangerously close to achieving his objective in the Shinjuku Showdown Arc when all eyes were turned toward Gojo’s battle with Sukuna.

However, he was soon faced with Takaba, a sorcerer who looked unintimidating at first glance. Kenjaku thought the same, which led to his undoing. Takaba’s power relied on his nature of being a comedian, where others would be forced into taking part in funny scenarios with him.

Kenjaku, whose end goal was always enjoyment, got stuck in the same loop. Due to the antagonist being distracted, the nearby Yuta could take advantage. He swiftly beheaded him, ending the tale of Kenjaku, or Pseudo-Geto.

The real Geto later appeared in Gojo’s afterlife sequence, sharing a hearty conversation with his friend and laughing together.

Suguru Geto’s dual deaths in Jujutsu Kaisen are a source of unending debate in the fandom. Most fans agree that while Geto’s turn to evil was heartbreaking, his death in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was deserved.

He had killed multiple people and was a threat to humans as well as sorcerers. However, unlike other antagonists who were evil for the sake of it, Geto had a legitimate reason. He tried being a good man, but his frustrations with Jujutsu Society eventually got the better of him.

This led to his epic clash with Yuta and his memorable farewell with Gojo. The fall of a villain we all loved was an extremely emotional scene that elevated the series’ storytelling to the next level. At the same time, his revival following this is what some believe might have gone too far.

No matter how evil Geto was, Kenjaku was much worse. He emotionally manipulated Gojo using Geto’s body, committing unmentionable atrocities. Due to this, while Geto’s death was something he definitely deserved, a fate as Kenjaku’s puppet was not warranted.

At the same time, this doesn’t mean that it was a bad writing decision. Pseudo-Geto’s reveal remains one of the most shocking moments in anime history, solidifying the position of both Geto and Kenjaku as great antagonists.

Conclusion

Suguru Geto is one of Jujutsu Kaisen’s most compelling and tragic characters. From his promising beginnings to his ideological downfall and eventual possession by Kenjaku, his story is filled with layers of complexity. While his final fate in the series is heavily contested among fans, it has helped make him a much more memorable figure.
