Obito Uchiha is one of Naruto’s most enigmatic and complex characters, captivating fans through his tragic life. Over the course of his character arc, we have felt sympathy for him, hated him, and even loved him. As a result, he has been an immensely impactful figure, acting as an antagonist for a major part of the series.

1) Obito’s Sacrifice To Save Kakashi
Long before Obito became a terrifying villain, he was a dedicated ninja who worked alongside Rin and Kakashi in Team Minato. During this time, the Third Great Ninja War was in full swing when Rin was captured by enemies from Iwagakure.
Obito moved quickly to save his friend, while Kakashi was also inspired by his decision. Upon finding Rin and removing her restraints, however, her captors decided to collapse the cave in which she was held.
In a moment of valiant bravery, Obito noticed a boulder falling on Kakashi and pushed him out of the way. As a result, he was crushed under the cave, only awaiting his death. Obito gave his Sharingan to Kakashi, telling him to protect Rin. This was a heartbreaking scene where many believed the young Obito had died, becoming an integral part of Kakashi’s growth. In truth, he was saved by White Zetsu and Madara.
2) Obito Creates Pain
Upon being saved by Madara, Obito underwent a complete transformation. He assumed the identity of Tobi and attempted to convince Nagato to join his cause. While his proposal was refused by Yahiko, he put his nefarious plan into action in the background.
When Yahiko was under attack by Danzo and his forces, Obito prevented other Akatsuki members from saving him. He subtly pushed Nagato toward becoming the leader of the Akatsuki, which led to him taking on the alias of Pain.
This series of events led to the eventual destruction of Konoha, carefully orchestrated by Obito.
3) Obito Sets the Nine-Tails Free
While fans knew that Minato and Kushina had given their lives for the sake of protecting Naruto and the village, the actual circumstances surrounding this were even more tragic. The man at the center of this was, yet again, Obito.
This occurred when Obito snuck into Konoha and extracted the Nine-Tails from Kushina’s body soon after Naruto was born. He ordered it to destroy the village, which it nearly achieved. Thankfully, Minato appeared and had an intense fight against the antagonist.
The Fourth Hokage finally gave his life and even lost his wife while sealing Kurama into his son’s body. Obito, while injured, successfully escaped. No one but the viewers were aware of his involvement in shaping the protagonist’s life.
4) Obito Declaring the Fourth Great Ninja War
One of the most exciting and shocking moments in Naruto came when Obito intruded upon the Five Kage Summit. He fearlessly appeared in front of the leaders of the villages, telling them that he was Madara Uchiha. He then ordered them to turn over the remaining Jinchurikis for his plan.
Since the Kage refused his ultimatum, Obito announced the beginning of the Fourth Great Ninja War. He disappeared soon after, which left an extreme sense of chaos in the series. All the Great Ninja Wars up to that point had resulted in immense tragedy.
However, the fourth one, which would feature Madara and all the Tailed Beasts, would drastically increase the stakes.
5) Obito’s Real Identity Is Revealed
For years, no one was aware of Tobi’s real identity, leading to countless theories. While he himself had claimed to be Madara, there was still little proof to support it. Finally, during the Fourth Great Ninja War, everyone discovered his identity.
After getting hit by Naruto during their battle, Tobi’s mask shattered. At this point, his face was revealed, shocking viewers and characters. Kakashi and Guy, who were at the scene, were visibly shaken to identify Tobi as their old friend, Obito.
This revelation elevated the significance of the war, as the main characters were facing one of their own. It also laid to rest years of foreshadowing and buildup.
6) Obito vs Kakashi
The majority of Naruto fans consider Obito’s fight against Kakashi to be one of the best battles in all of anime. This is well-earned acclaim as well since the fight was a culmination of excitement, emotion, and a brutal past.
The former friends clashed in Obito’s Kamui dimension, mirroring the confrontation they had as children. With a high-octane fight enhanced by fluid animation, fans were hooked from start to end. Their fight ended with both of them stabbing each other, after which Obito returned to the real world.
7) Obito Revives Madara
While Obito being Madara had been debunked by the series, he had still been heavily influenced by the great ninja. However, after having a poignant battle with Naruto, where both of them exchange the feelings in their hearts, Obito came to realize the error in his ways.
Right when the villain had been defeated, however, a new twist in the tale was introduced. Black Zetsu suddenly appeared, taking over Obito’s body and forcing him to revive Madara. It showed how the main antagonist was always Madara and how he had backup plans in case Obito betrayed him. Hence, the emergence of the true mastermind of the war left fans in disbelief.
8) Obito’s Death
Obito had already begun his path toward redemption after his fight with Naruto. He openly opposed Madara, saved the protagonist, and even assisted Sasuke. Unfortunately, the introduction of Kaguya Otsutsuki and her insurmountable powers easily overpowered the main characters.
In the face of this, Obito realized that his contribution and the only way to make amends would be by sacrificing himself to protect his friend once again. As a result, when Kaguya launched a deadly move at Kakashi, Obito protected him by taking the attack himself.
Realizing his end was near, he apologized to Kakashi and placed his faith in Naruto for the future. This moment was further enhanced by the scene of Obito in the afterlife, where he reunited with Rin. It made most viewers shed tears, ending the tale of a fearsome villain on a heroic note.
