Fans of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man series have been introduced to a whole bunch of new characters in the Academy Saga. After all, most of the characters from Part 1 either faded into the background or met horrible ends. With Chainsaw Man Part 2’s inception, it was once again time to witness Denji, the series protagonist, get thrown into a blender of absurdity, betrayal, and most importantly – existential dread.

Among the many enigmatic figures introduced in Part 2, Fami stands out as one of the most mysterious and deceptive characters. Although much of her character is yet to be explored, one thing became crystal clear to the readers – Fami isn’t just another minor antagonist of this saga.

Rather, she’s part of something much bigger, something that could likely reshape the entire world of Chainsaw Man. Follow this article to learn more about Fami’s character in Chainsaw Man, her role in the story, her connection to Yoru, and more.

Who Is Fami in Chainsaw Man?

Fami is the Famine Devil, who represents the fear of famine and starvation. In addition to that, she’s a member of the Four Horsemen – basically a quadrumvirate of some of the most powerful and influential Devils. Other members of the Four Horsemen include the War Devil, the Control Devil, and the Death Devil.

For the sake of appearance, Fami poses as a student at Fourth East High School, which is the school that Denji and Asa Mitaka attend. She is also the true leader of the Chainsaw Man Church. For context, the Chainsaw Man Church is basically a cult-like project that aims to sacrifice all its followers to strengthen the Chainsaw Man and War Devil through public fear. To accomplish this, they adopted a facade of creating a world without evil.

Although Fami is technically one of the main antagonists of Chainsaw Man‘s Academy Saga, her main goal is to prevent the arrival of the Death Devil on Earth, which would be followed by the extinction of humanity and the inception of a global Age of Devils. A crucial element of Fami’s plan is to make use of Yoru, aka the War Devil, who she claims is the only one capable of preventing the deadly prophecy put forward by Nostradamus.

As for her personality, Fami appears to be extremely laid back yet somewhat eccentric at first glance. She is perhaps the series’ most mysterious character yet, who shows little to no outward emotion. She always sports a calm, cold, and composed demeanor, and seems to know a lot more than she initially leads on. Her appearances proved that she is as calculating and manipulative as she is powerful.

Fami’s Connection to Yoru in Chainsaw Man

Fami and Yoru’s relationship in Chainsaw Man is nothing short of complicated. As fellow Horsemen, they share a sisterly bond, albeit it is one-sided. Fami is particularly affectionate towards Yoru, calling the War Devil her “little sister”. She even claimed that she would do anything for Yoru, and actively wants the latter to treat her like a sister.

While it’s unclear whether Fami truly cares for Yoru as a sister or not, the latter does not reciprocate the former’s feelings in the slightest. In fact, Yoru believes that Fami is unhinged and even warned Asa to stay away from her.

It’s heavily implied that Fami has a similar relationship with the other Four Horsemen as well. This is further supported by the fact that the current Control Devil, Nayuta, referred to Fami as her sister. At the same time, Fami isn’t exactly above using her “sisters” as pawns for her plans. Her goals also contrasts with both Asa and Yoru’s – thus making it seem like she’s playing both sides at times.

Fami’s Powers and Abilities in Chainsaw Man

Fami isn’t exactly a character that has been explored in great detail in Chainsaw Man. As such, the full extent of her powers and abilities are currently unknown. Regardless, since she’s a member of the Four Horsemen, we can assume that she possesses all of the standard Devil abilities and more.

Based on what we have seen of her so far, it’s clear that she has an ability that lets her influence the power of Devils in some way. She has never once directly engaged anyone in combat in the series. Instead, she prefers to make use of the powers of other Devils who are either under her direct control, or who willingly cooperate with her. She also has an enhanced healing ability, which lets her heal others.

Lastly, she possesses a powerful ability called “Enslavement”. Given that she represents the fear of famine and starvation, her Enslavement ability is a direct reflection of her nature as the Famine Devil. In other words, it basically lets her weaken or debilitate others by inducing starvation or deprivation. This in turn lets her turn her opponents into her pawns, who she then uses to do her bidding. This is a particularly terrifying ability, since it works even on a Primal Fear Devil like the Falling Devil.

Compared to Makima, whose power was outright domination, Fami’s abilities seem more subtle yet equally terrifying. She might not be able to crush her opponents in an instant, but she’ll certainly drive them to a corner where defeat would seem inevitable.

Fami’s Importance in Chainsaw Man

Although it may not seem like it at times, Fami is actually the main antagonist of Chainsaw Man‘s Academy Saga. She may have limited appearances, but there’s a clear reason behind it. If you look closely at Fami’s character, she’s not someone who has to appear in every second chapter to be a menace. Instead, she’s a character who pulls the strings entirely from the shadows, and has a clear agenda of her own – though it’s not clear to us as of now.

While it’s certainly true that she aims to neutralize the Death Devil once the latter finally makes an appearance on Earth, there’s a high chance that her true motive might be something entirely different. After all, this is a character who we know next to nothing about. However, from what we have seen of her, it’s clear that she’s no ordinary antagonist – she’s a kingmaker.

Fami is one of the few characters who truly seems to understand the bigger picture. While everyone else seems to be either obsessed with personal vendettas or struggling with existential crisis, Fami quietly set the stage for all the chaos that is currently happening in the Academy Saga. As such, it’s safe to assume that when the Death Devil finally does enter the picture, Fami will likely be at the center of it all.

Conclusion

Fami is certainly one of Chainsaw Man‘s most intriguing and unpredictable characters right now. She operates in an entirely different manner from the other Horsemen. While Yoru is blinded by her personal grudge against Chainsaw Man, Fami seems to be playing a much bigger game. That said, what exactly is Fami’s endgame – survival or domination? Is she a villain or an antihero? Stay tuned to find out!
