The finale of Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 left fans questioning the real identity of the mysterious man who wore Geto’s appearance as a mask. The anime took a sharp turn from explosive action scenes to focus on the shrouded identity of this person. When the final showdown between Mahito and Yuji Itadori concluded, Geto suddenly came seemingly for Mahito’s aid. However, at this point in the story, it was revealed that Geto wasn’t the one who had partnered up with Gojo Satoru years ago. Rather, it was a mysterious person under an unnerving disguise.

However, Choso suddenly yelled out the man’s name, Noritoshi Kamo. It created a brief confusion with another Noritoshi Kamo, who was the heir of the Kamo clan. Nevertheless, the mysterious Noritoshi Kamo behind Geto’s body was actually a totally different man from a different era. So, who was he exactly?

Noritoshi Kamo’s True Identity

At this point, the identity of the person wearing Geto’s body was a bit confusing. Was it brainwashed Geto? Was it Noritoshi Kamo from the past? The Noritoshi Kamo that Choso knew was technically his father. This Noritoshi Kamo was an ancestor of the Kamo clan who lived 150 years ago in the Meiji era.

At that time, he ran a temple and secretly performed experiments of merging human flesh and cursed energy. He did this by imprisoning a woman who was able to give birth to a half-human and half-cursed child. Noritoshi Kamo earned a certain degree of notoriety during this era and was regarded as a stain to the Kamo clan. However, the true nature of this Kamo clan ancestor was never known because this Noritoshi Kamo was possessed by the same person who had Geto’s body, Kenjaku.

Kenjaku was the one behind all vile human and cursed spirit experiments. He was a Jujutsu sorcerer who wanted to force humans into another level of evolution. To achieve it, he aimed to merge human souls and cursed spirits, hence his past experiments as Noritoshi Kamo. These experiments resulted in the creation of the nine cursed objects known as the Cursed Womb: Death Paintings.

When Was Noritoshi Kamo’s Identity Revealed

The reveal of Kenjaku being the real person behind Noritoshi Kamo and Geto was a crucial plot point before the Culling Game arc in Jujutsu Kaisen. It started when Choso realized his brotherly connection with Yuji. As a reincarnated Cursed Womb, Choso could sense if another incarnated Cursed Womb was about to die.

This is what happened when Yuji and Nobara defeated Eso and Kechizu, the other reincarnated Cursed Wombs. In fact, Choso was highly sentimental towards the other Cursed Wombs, including the ones who were still in their cursed object forms. So much so that Choso regarded them as his brothers. However, in his fight against Yuji, he felt this exact sensation and it led to his realization of his connection with Yuji.

Although the reason why Choso was able to feel a connection with Yuji isn’t explained at this point in Jujutsu Kaisen, it’s later revealed that Kenjaku’s cursed technique is a big factor. Kenjaku’s cursed technique allowed him to inhabit a person’s body by transplanting his brain into the person’s corpse. This is revealed when Kenjaku confronted Gojo as Geto and opened his skull dome, revealing his brain.

Choso was able to take a clue that the brotherly connection he felt meant that the Noritoshi Kamo that he knew was the reason behind all this. However, at this point, Choso didn’t know that this brain was Kenjaku. The reveal only happened later in chapter 145 of Jujutsu Kaisen, when the revered ancient guardian of Jujutsu sorcery, Master Tengen, revealed Kenjaku’s real motivation.

Noritoshi Kamo’s Past Experiments

As Noritoshi Kamo, Kenjaku’s experiments gave him a bad reputation among the Kamo clan. Merging humans and cursed spirits was already something that was frowned upon. However, his methods were even more vile than anyone could imagine. It all started when a woman who gave birth to a half-human, half-curse child was exiled by her family. She ran away only to stumble upon Noritoshi Kamo, who later took advantage of her for his cursed spirits experiments.

As mentioned before, the result was the nine cursed objects, Cursed Womb: Death Paintings. As cursed objects, each Cursed Womb appeared like a chunk of inanimate flesh encased within a cylinder. However, at some point in Jujutsu Kaisen, Mahito managed to steal three of these cursed objects. Later, Kenjaku as Geto and Mahito reincarnated three of them, who later became Choso, Eso, and Kechizu. Kenjaku knew about these cursed objects because he was the one who created them in the first place as Noritoshi Kamo.

Noritoshi Kamo, the Kamo clan ancestor, in Jujutsu Kaisen, was merely a vessel for Kenjaku. The real Noritoshi Kamo’s personality was never revealed in the series. However, the reveal of Choso’s sentiment toward Yuji and Kenjaku’s cursed technique implied that Kenjaku was somehow related to Yuji. And that would be correct.

At some point in the Jujutsu Kaisen story, Yuji’s mother also fell victim to Kenjaku’s cursed technique. Much like Noritoshi Kamo, Yuji’s mother was also a Jujutsu sorcerer who became Kenjaku’s vessel. It’s confirmed in chapter 143 where the manga takes a flashback to the time when Yuji was a baby.

In summary, as Noritoshi Kamo, Kenjaku experimented with cursed spirits and the human body. Then he left those experiments incomplete because the other Jujutsu sorcerers got a hold of them and sealed them away. Then Kenjaku inhabited other various people’s bodies, one of which was Yuji’s mother.

Conclusion

Kenjaku is a tricky character for fans to wrap their heads around. The background, the multiple identities, and Kenjaku’s ultimate goal were all elaborate and complex. His time as Noritoshi Kamo stained the reputation of the clan.

The Kamo clan had always been regarded as one of the most influential clans in the Jujutsu Kaisen world, alongside the Zenin and Gojo clans. What he did essentially became a shame among the clan, even after more than a century. On top of that, Kenjaku gained the reputation as the most evil Jujutsu sorcerer in history as Noritoshi Kamo in Jujutsu Kaisen.
