One of the many things that propelled My Hero Academia to the heights it has reached over the years is its incredible roster of villains. That said, few villains of the series have managed to balance sheer ruthlessness with an unshakeable ideology quite like Kai Chisaki – the fearsome leader of the yakuza better known as Overhaul.
Overhaul wasn’t your average power-hungry or overly violent yakuza looking to cause chaos or destruction for the sake of it. Instead, he was one of the most compelling antagonists of the series, not just because of his horrifyingly brutal methods, but also because of how his ideology clashed with the fundamental themes of My Hero Academia.
But let’s not sugarcoat anything – he’s also one of the most hateable characters in My Hero Academia. His horrific abuse of Eri and his overall disregard for human life in general made him a villain you didn’t just want to see defeated – you’d want to see him suffer for everything he has done. And that he certainly and fortunately did. With that said, let us delve deeper into Kai Chisaki’s character, explore his Quirks and other abilities, and determine his overall importance in the story.
Who Is Overhaul in My Hero Academia?
Kai Chisaki, also known as Overhaul, is one of My Hero Academia‘s most memorable villains. He made his first appearance in the series as the main antagonist of the Shie Hassaikai arc.
In the said arc, he was the leader of Shie Hassaikai – a fearsome yakuza organization that he controlled with an iron grip. It’s also worth mentioning that he was a germophobic, antisocial sociopath who was obsessed with returning the world to how it used to be, before the emergence of Quirks.
The context behind his grand ideology is simple – Shie Hassaikai, the organization he was leading, had been declining in influence since the rise of heroes and villains in Japan. Because of this, Chisaki started viewing Quirks as a “disease” that had thrown society into chaos. Thus, his mission in life became to completely eradicate Quirks from existence and restore the yakuza to power – by any means necessary.
Under his leadership, Shie Hassaikai developed a twisted plan of mass-producing Quirk-destroying bullets made from the blood and cells of Eri, a young girl with the terrifying power of reversing a living body back to its previous state. Basically, Overhaul’s entire operation revolved around exploiting and abusing a helpless child. The irony in all this is the fact that despite being a germophobe who wore a plague doctor mask at all times, Overhaul had no problem in getting his hands dirty – both literally and figuratively.
Overhaul’s Role in My Hero Academia
As mentioned earlier, Overhaul served as the main antagonist of the Shie Hassaikai arc. However, his prominence in the series dropped significantly after his plans of grandeur were thrown out of the window. Regardless, his introduction in the Shie Hassaikai arc left a massive impression on everyone. After all, in one of his earliest appearances, we saw him effortlessly dismantling the League of Villains’ plans and even murder one of its members just to make a statement.
Chisaki’s character arc mostly revolved around his inhumane treatment of Eri, the granddaughter of the former boss of the Shie Hassaikai. Eri’s Rewind Quirk allowed her to revert living beings to a previous state. Chisaki exploited this ability of hers to manufacture Quirk-destroying bullets, which he planned to mass produce and sell to both heroes and villains, thus manipulating both sides for his benefit all while achieving his goal of erasing Quirks from existence.
The Shie Hassaikai arc was particularly important for Deku, who went up against Overhaul in one of the series’ most emotionally intense and high-stakes battles. At that point, it wasn’t just about defeating another villain – it was about saving a helpless, innocent child who had suffered horrific abuse for years due to no fault of her own.
Overhaul’s Quirk and Other Abilities in My Hero Academia
Kai Chisaki, aka Overhaul, whose Quirk, which is also called “Overhaul,” was undoubtedly one of My Hero Academia‘s most terrifying Quirks. With a single touch, he could completely disassemble anything, as well as reassemble it in any configuration he wanted. This ability essentially gave Overhaul full control over matter itself.
His Quirk also gave him absurd levels of versatility – he could instantly kill his enemies by literally breaking them down at a molecular level, reconstruct his own body to heal himself, and even merge with others to enhance his own abilities. This happened in the climax of the Shie Hassaikai arc, where Chisaki fused himself with his subordinates. By doing so, he basically turned himself into a grotesque kaiju-like monster, which also made him exponentially more powerful.
Apart from this overpowered ability, Kai Chisaki was also incredibly durable and had enhanced reflexes. Moreover, he was a strategic mastermind who used his ability expertly to cover up his tracks.
Overhaul’s Importance in My Hero Academia
There’s no denying that after his plan fell apart, Overhaul’s importance in My Hero Academia plummeted at an astonishing speed – especially since he was literally stripped of his Quirk and left permanently disabled by the League of Villains. However, his overall character arc made him much more than just another villain of the week. His ideology that Quirks are a disease and should be purged directly contrasted with My Hero Academia‘s core theme – the importance of individuality.
This was undoubtedly an interesting creative choice by the mangaka, Kohei Horikoshi. Moreover, Chisaki’s actions marked a significant turning point for the series, as it not only led to Mirio Togata losing his Quirk (albeit temporarily), but it also resulted in the unexpected demise of Sir Nighteye. Lastly, his downfall was poetic in a way, as a man who once sought to erase Quirks ended up ultimately getting erased himself.

Kai Chisaki is, without question, one of the most compelling and memorable villains in My Hero Academia. He was a villain who genuinely believed he was above everyone else and thus committed several horrific acts by convincing himself that they were all for the sake of his grand plans.
Overall, his character arc left a lasting impact on the storyline as well as on fans in general, while also reminding everyone that the world of heroes and villains in My Hero Academia wasn’t always just black and white.
