How to Beat Bulette in Baldur’s Gate 3

BG3 How to Defeat Bulette

The best way to beat the Bulette boss in Baldur’s Gate 3 is to focus on using crowd-control effects to knock it prone and target it with powerful single-target spells. The Bulette is a monstrous creature that can be effectively controlled with spells like Command, Ice Arrows, and other crowd-control abilities. Its most dangerous move, Deadly Leap, can knock your characters back and stun them by making them prone.

You’ll encounter the Bulette in the Underdark as you explore. When the ground starts to shake, and a pile of rocks begins to shift, it’s a sign that Bulette is about to emerge. A helpful strategy is to switch to turn-based combat and prepare by spreading out your party. You can also use an ice arrow or chromatic orb with ice on the rock pile to potentially knock the boss prone before it fully emerges. It’s wise to have a party composition heavy on spellcasters rather than melee fighters, as weapon damage is less effective against the Bulette. Spells like Scorching Ray, Magic Missile, and Grease are excellent for both dealing damage and controlling the boss.

During the fight, keep your party members spread out to minimize the risk of multiple characters being stunned or knocked prone at once. Focus on using crowd-control effects each turn to keep the Bulette under control and prevent it from dealing damage.

Bulette Stats & Resistances BG3

Bulette Stats & Resistances BG3

Below are Bulette Stats and features in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Level: 5
  • HP: 125 balanced, 162 honour mode
  • AC: 17
  • STR: 19
  • DEX: 11
  • CON: 21
  • INT: 2
  • WIS: 10
  • CHA: 5
  • Race: Monstrosity
  • Resistances: Slashing, Piercing, Bludgeoning, Acid
  • Legendary Action
    • Shredding Scales: Gain Diamond Scales condition grants 100 temporary hit points, expels crystalline scale outward, causing bleeding damage, and any damage lower than 15 will not affect Bulette.

During the Bulette fight, he burrows and leaps out from the ground, initially setting someone prone and skipping a turn. Therefore, spread out and turn on turn-based mode when the create shakes the ground. Additionally, the Bulette will be resistant to melee damage and range piercing; therefore, it’s best to defeat him with spellcasters to work around this resistance.

Moreover, you can avoid nearly all damage from him just by stunning the Bulette prone on turn one. Use a Battle Master Fighter, Cleric, or Paladin with Command Spell, or even Ice Arrows with a Ranger.

Bulette Attacks, Abilities, & Mechanics

Bulette Attacks, Abilities, & Mechanics - Baldur's Gate 3

The Bulette’s most disruptive attack is Deadly Leap, knocking a target back and prone. This attack has a range of 18 meters; thus, playing far back doesn’t help you. Moreover, combat will initiate with this mechanic, and spreading out is important to avoid the stunnedness of multiple characters. Below are the Bulette Attacks and abilities in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Bite: Bite a target and possibly push it back 1.5 meters.
  • Corrosive Phlegm: Expectorate acid on a target range of 14 meters.
  • Deadly Leap: Leap to your targets up to 18 meters, pushing them back and possibly making them fall Prone.
  • Burrow: Burrow into the ground to escape combat and recover hit points.
  • Shredding Scales: Expel crystalline scales outward, possibly causing targets to Bleed.

In summary, spend the initial turn doing your best to stun or knock prone the Bulette to defeat it without any counterattack. If it gets to attack on turn one, expect an incoming stun on a target vulnerable or at range.

Bulette Legendary Action – Honour Mode

Honour Mode difficulty introduces the Legendary Action Shredding Scales, which boost the creature’s temporary hit points by 100, and any damage lower than 15 will not affect it.  Thus, you will likely only damage the Bulette with spells at level 3 or higher, which will run out quickly. You can avoid the mechanic by constantly stunning the Bulette and beating it before using the legendary action. Additionally, the Legendary Action Shredding Scales expel crystalline scales outward, possibly causing targets to Bleed. Therefore, you want to be away from the Bulette if this mechanic is triggered to avoid unnecessary damage.

Party Composition

For the Bulette Fight on Honour Mode, we used the following builds at level 5:

Turn one and use the Cleric’s Command spell grovel to stun the Bulette while the other characters unload damage. Additionally, whichever character is detected by the Bulette immediately enters the turn base and sneaks with the other characters. Typically, only one will be in combat, allowing the others to get a free attack before entering the fight.

Your options to stun the Bulette on turn one are Ranger with Ice Arrows, Barbarian with Enraged Throw, Sorcerer with Chormaic Orb Ice, or Cleric Command. Cycle through each character until the Bulette is defeated, then spend the rest of the turns doing damage while preventing it from taking at turn.

Where to Find Bulette in Baldur’s Gate 3

The Bulette will appear at three spawn points near entrances in the Underdark. The easiest place to locate the Bulette is near the Spider Matriarch hole entrance to the Underdark, which requires you to use Feather Fall. As you make your way to the Myconid Colony, likely the Bulette will use its burrow attack and fight you. However, you are also likely to find the Bulette near the Underdark Sussur tree on the west side of the map.

Loot and Rewards for Beating Bulette

BG3 Bloodguzzler Garb

After beating the Bulette, make sure to grab the Bloodguzzler Garb. This is intended for a Barbarian melee build who takes damage frequently. The garb generates Wrath, a buff that gives you a +1 bonus to damage with melee weapons. This effect stacks with other items like Enraging Heart Garb, Linebreaker Boots, and Cap of Wrath. Therefore, it incentivizes Barbarians to play aggressively and do more damage as they take more.
