Discover the astonishing potential of the most overpowered Wizard spell in Baldur’s Gate 3 that you’re not using and how to get them!

BG3 The Most Overpowered Wizard Spells

Unlike other spellcasters, Wizards have a unique special feature Spell Scribing which allows them to permanently learn spells from spell scrolls. For the cost of gold, you can permanently unlock and cast spells from other classes and schools of magic. Additionally, throughout the game, you encounter scrolls that offer unique one-of-a-kind spells that can only be learned by the Wizard. These are some of the most overpowered spells in Baldur’s Gate 3 and in this guide, we will show you how to unlock and use them on your Wizard build.

The Most Overpowered Wizard Spell in Baldur’s Gate 3

The Wizard can learn four overpowered spells in Baldur’s Gate 3: Find Familiar Cheeky Quasit, Artistry of War, Dethrone, and Sights of the Seelie Summon Deva. Cheey Quasit, or Shovel, is a summon that can be unlocked in Act 1. This creature has invisibility and once summoned, helps early Act 1 fights specifically in Honour Mode difficulty. Artistry of War is a more powerful version of Magic Missile, firing 6 bolts and doing force damage. Dethrone is a necrotic single-target damage spell that hits extremely hard and is reminiscent of Blight. Lastly, the Seelie Summon Deva is similar to the Cleric’s Planar Ally spell.

How to Learn Spells BG3

To learn these spells, you will need to obtain the scrolls from either the Apothecary’s Cellar in Act 1 or the Sorcerous Sundries Vault in Act 3. Once obtained, transcribe the scroll to permanently unlock it in your spell book. These four overpowered spells all aid your Wizard build with more versatility, damage and summons. Next up in our guide, let us show you how to unlock them.

Find Familiar Cheeky Quasit

BG3 Cheeky Quasit Spell
BG3 Locating Shovel Summon

Find Familiar Cheeky Quasit features in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Description: Summon Cheeky Quasit as an action.
  • Cost: Action + Level 1 spell slot
  • Learn Spell: 50 gold
  • Range: 9 meter
  • Concentration: no
  • Upcast: no
  • How to Find: In the Apothecary’s Cellar, Act 1, underneath Blighted Village

Within the Blighted Villiage in Act 1, you will find the Apothecary’s Cellar. This Cellar contains not only the Shovel spell, but the Necromancy of Thay which is important in Act 3. Pull a hidden lever within the initial area to unlock more of the Cellar and find the scroll within a casket near the Ornate Mirror. Learn the spell to unlock Summon Quasit permanently.

BG3 Shovel's Abilities

What makes Summon Quasit (Shovel) overpowered is its ability to go Invisible, and Frighten an enemy with Scare. Shovel doesn’t do much damage, but the Frighten status effect prevents an enemy from moving and is helpful to prevent damage. Moreover, Shovel can be killed and resummoned following a short rest. The spell can stack with Scratch, the dog ally unlocked early in Act 1 as well. Combine both Shovel and Scratch for two companions on the battlefield to create distractions, damage, and harass the enemy.

Artistry of War

BG3 Artistry of War Spell

Artistry of War features in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Description: Summon the apparitions of 6 master strategists. Each apparition strikes a target of your choosing, dealing 2d6 + 6 Force damage.
  • Cost: Action + Level 5
  • Learn Spell: 50 gold
  • Range: 18 meters
  • Concentration: no
  • Upcast: no
  • How to Find: Found in the Red Knight’s Final Strategem book in Sorcerous Sundries Vault at X: 368 Y: 1057.

The Artistry of War spell is similar to Magic Missile, however it’s only a level 5 spell and cannot be upcast. The strength of Aristry of War is it shoots out 6 bolts of force damage, each dealing between 8-18 damage. This spell is particularly useful in fights that require force damage like Raphael, or other enemies that require multiple targets to be hit.

Specifically, fighting Auntie Ethel in Act 3 will summon low-health enemies or illusions requiring you to do some sort of damage to each before revealing the correct target. Lastly, fighting Orin on Honour Mode difficulty can be tough when she is invulnerable to damage unless you hit her a specific amount of times. With Artistry of War, you can unload force damage and remove 6 stacks of her unstoppable buff.

BG3 The Red Knight's Final Stratagem

To obtain the Artistry of War spell, obtain the book The Red Knight’s Final Stratagem located in Sundries Vault’s hidden entrance. The entrance can be located at the back of Ramazith’s Tower.

Dethrone

BG3 Dethrone Spell

Dethrone features in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Description: Shred a foe’s very essence by pulling on strands of the Weave dealing 10d6 +20 Necrotic damage.
  • Cost: Action + Level 5
  • Learn Spell: 50 gold
  • Range: 30 meters
  • Concentration: no
  • Upcast: no
  • How to Find: Found in Sorcerous Sundries Vault, section Karsus within a book.

The Dethrone spell is a powerful Necrotic damage spell with an unmatched 30-meter range. Dethrone is similar in style to Blight, though that spell only has a 9-meter range and a much lower damage floor. Additionally, Dethrone costs a level 5 spell slot, which is only one higher than Blight.

With Dethrone, you can open combat from stealth and trigger the surprise status effect at a great distance. Just make sure the enemies you hit, are not resistant or immune to Necrotic damage. Lastly, be aware that Dethrone cannot be used repeatedly in combat and is limited to once per long rest.

BG3 the Annals of Karsus

To find Dethrone, locate the Annals of Karsus book within the Sorcerous Sundries Vault. You want to unlock the Karsus vault by going through these doors: Silverhand > Abjuration > Silver Door. Once inside, flip the switch, read the book, and obtain the scroll of Dethrone.

Sights of the Seelie Summon Deva

BG3 Sights of the Seelie Summon Deva Spell

Sights of the Seelie Summon Deva features in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Description: Summon a Deva to fight for you. The Deva can cast Wrathful Smite, Revivify, and Concussive Smash.
  • Cost: Action + Level 6
  • Learn Spell: 50 gold
  • Range: 18 meters
  • Concentration: no
  • Upcast: no
  • How to Find: Found in the Caution Before the Seelie book in Sorcerous Sundries Vault at X: 350 Y: 1010.

The most overpowered of all Wizard spells on this list in Baldur’s Gate 3 is Summon Deva. This summoning spell creates a Deva, similar to Planar Ally from the Cleric spell list. The Deva has over 130 HP, Wrathful Smite, Revivfy, and Concussive Smash. This summons stacks with Stratch, Shovel, animate dead, conjure elemental, and more. Thus, you can have an entire army of allies fighting for you. Moreover, you can obtain the Infernal Rapier at the End of Act 2 with Wyll and gain access to a free Planar Ally spell.

Helpful Items

With Patch 6, this spell now costs a level 6 spell slot. Three items negate the cost of a spell slot: Spellcrux Amulet, Spellpower Staff, and Markoheshkir Legendary Quarterstaff. These items can allow you to cast Sights of the Seelie Summon Deva and save your level 6 spell for another powerful Wizard spell.

BG3 Hidden Library

The scroll to obtain Sights of the Seelie Summon Deva can be found in a hidden door within the Sorcerous Vaults. Use the see invisibility and walk through the wall at X: 350 Y: 1010. Here, you will find the book Caution Before the Seelie, which once read, rewards the player with a Scroll of Bestial Communion.
